TTG Talk

LIKE MANY others, I am outraged, having fished through my bag for boarding passes on many occasions (“UKinbound: airport shops “not helping” tourism in VAT row”, ttgdigital.com). However, I once heard a retailer

saying that the tills were set up so they cannot sell anything without the boarding pass – which means that the poor staff are now facing a barrage of angry customers when it’s not their fault. It is a practice that needs to be

nipped in the bud, but please don’t have a go at the retailers or refuse to get your boarding

Emails, Tweets, Facebook, web comments and your opinions – what the travel trade is saying this week

COMMENTS OF THE WEEK

Call to boycott tills in airport VAT row

passes out, because it will not help the situation. Just boycott the tills altogether

until the practice is changed and notices are displayed to this effect. Cathie O’Dea

Another form of corruption is uncovered in this country, yet again passengers are a captive audience and continue to be fleeced. You cannot bring drinks through security

but you can buy them at rip-off prices in the air-side shops. Race Welch

This is certainly a scandal. Shops act as tax collectors for VAT, much as airlines do for APD but if the shops are not paying the government the tax they collect, they shouldn’t be collecting it in the first place. Alan Bowen
