How to survive the silly season Barbara Charlton

SILVER LININGS I expect everyone is feeling frazzled and

just a bit frayed at the edges after a busy January? I know I am! But actually, the craziness of peak booking season was a lovely way to start the year because it brought with it lots of varied enquiries to keep me on my toes. Amongst the regular beach holidays, my enquiries included a three-week trip for four adults, one of them in a wheelchair wanting to drive from LA up to the Canadian Rockies and through Yellowstone in an RV. Another repeat client wanted to stay at a dude ranch in southern Arizona, followed by a self-drive up through the national parks of Northern Arizona. It’s always nice to get out of

our comfort zone, and whilst complicated itineraries take more time to plan and confi rm, I’m happy to organise them because I know that Joe Public needs an expert to guide them and therefore there is less chance of them taking our knowledge and suggestions elsewhere! One factor is helping all these bookings: the great-value airfare and holiday deals out there so far this year, which are encouraging sales.

LIFE'S A ROLLERCOASTER Every year has its ups and downs and I am preparing to have yet another operation on my right shoulder. The procedure has put paid to one of my New Year’s resolutions – to be operation-free for a year! It’s also on my writing arm, but on the plus side, seeing me with my arm in a sling does encourage family members to do more around the house! Like many TCs, I am looking

forward to spending a night on the new P&O ship Britannia next month. At our conference in November we were informed that ALL of us would be invited on this overnight treat, and with over 800 TCs in the UK that is quite an undertaking!

AHOY THERE CRUISE SALES! With all outside cabins on this new ship boasting a balcony, more single cabins and a Cookery School and cuisine to please the foodies out there, I'm really looking forward to spreading the word to my clients afterwards. They all love to hear where I go to, as it gives them ideas and the confi dence to act on them when they know I have had fi rst-hand experience of it. I don’t have the best sea legs in the

world (massive understatement – I got motion sickness from watching

If not, I do have my trusted anti-sickness pills that have stood me in good stead on Maldivian seaplanes, inter-island Greek ferries, helicopters over the outback and even the cable car on Table Mountain! If anyone needs the name of this miracle drug, drop me a line! Thanks to Selling Travel Editor Steve

Hartridge's recommendation, I am the proud owner of a new Canon Powershot camera. It even has a wifi connection to my iPhone! But why does nothing come with an instruction book these days? If you have any pictures of you on travels, be sure to send them in to editoral@ bmipublishing.co.uk.
