Flight Ready T is scare would be the first of many

challenges on my journey. To succeed, I had to know my plane and how to keep her in the air. As a pilot, I know that gravity is

my biggest enemy. Gravity is a force. It causes objects to fall to Earth. It pulls on my plane. To stay in the air, I need an opposing force called liſt .

Greater Than Gravity Liſt must be greater than gravity for

me to take off and fly high. T e shape of my plane’s wings helps create liſt . Each wing is flat on the bottom.

It’s curved on the top. Air flows over and under each wing. T e air moving underneath puts greater pressure on the wing. T e greater pressure liſt s everything up and overcomes gravity.

LIFT The force that opposes gravity. The shape of my plane’s wings creates lift when I fly.

THRUST The force that opposes drag. My engine and propeller create the thrust to move my plane forward.

GRAVITY The force that pulls everything toward the center of Earth. The more mass an object has, the more it is affected by gravity.
