June 15-Aug. 15 • Sailing Camps, Ventura. Kid can learn to sail during Ventura Yacht Club’s summer sailing camp. The one-week camp sessions will run from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in Ventura Harbor. Students learn the basics of sailing and safety by experienced instructors. They learn to rig and sail the boats and compete in short races. Aug. 3, 17 and 23, Sept. 7, 13 and 20 • Snorkel with Leopard Sharks, San Diego. Join aquarium naturalists and visit leopard sharks in their underwa- ter home off the La Jolla coast. Pick up snorkel tips as you discover the abun- dant variety of animals that live among the kelp, sandy bottom, and rocks. Intermediate swimming ability is required and previous snorkeling experience is recommended. Participants must supply their own gear. Aug. 8-9 • On-the-beach and in-store seminars with Bill Varney, various locations. Cousins Tackle and Bill Varney are teaming up this summer to inform and educate California anglers from San Diego to Santa Barbara on the finer points of light-tackle surf fishing. Key to this educational effort is a series of unique on-the-beach semi- nars where fishermen can observe Varney’s tackle and techniques for catching corbina, surf perch, halibut, yellowfin croaker and other beach species — then immediately put them into action with Varney and his assis- tants acting as “coaches.” Subjects cov- ered include natural bait selection and use, proper rigging, “reading” the surf, and working popular artificial lures such as soft plastics and crankbaits. For those who can’t make it down to the beach, Varney will also hold a series of free classroom-style surf fish- ing seminars that cover many of the same topics. Aug. 9 • Young Anglers Fishing Tournament, Shelter Island. This annual tournament sponsored by the Port of San Diego, the SD Sportfishing Council and the International Game Fish Assn. will mark its 12th consecu- tive year. Each year, more than 200 youngsters between the ages of 6-15 years compete for prizes and gifts all donated by many industry partners and local businesses. The tournament held on the Shelter Island Pier pro- vides a free lunch to all participants and entry to the tournament is free. Aug. 29-Sept. 1 • Festival of Sail, San Diego. The 2014 Festival of Sail, hosted by the Maritime Museum of San Diego, will transform the North Embarcadero into a nautical theme park. More than20 tall ships and other vessels from around the world will visit San Diego. The festival kicks off with a parade of tall ships on San Diego Bay, Thursday, Aug. 28. Parade begins at 11a.m. and can be seen from the embarcadero, Harbor Island, Shelter Island and Coronado. Festival visitors will enjoy touring the ships, marvelous food and drink from dozens of restaurant booths, a petting zoo, pirates, cannon battles on the bay, sunset cruises and shop for one of-a- kind items among more than 150 fes- tival vendors. Sept. 28 • 2014 Marine Mammal Gala, Laguna Beach. The Pacific Marine Mammal Center will host the annual gala from 5:30-9:30 p.m. at the center in an effort to raise funding for the organization. Sea Chantey Fest to be held Aug. 3 Aboard Star of India


SAN DIEGO – The Maritime Museum of San Diego along with San Diego Heritage, will host the 22nd annual Sea Chantey Fest aboard the museum’s Star of India, Aug. 3. For centuries, sailors have honed their shipboard skills to the


cadence of songs recounting the adventure, tragedy and romance of life at sea, according to the museum. The daylong event will be filled with sea chanteys and traditional


folk music performed by local and national artists such as The Jackstraws, The Bilge Pump Band, Gilman Carver and more. During the event, the Star of India sail crew will demonstrate vari- ous shipboard skills traditionally accompanied by sea chanteys and visitors will have a chance to join in and raise the sails of the ship. The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Adult museum admission is $16; children 12 and younger are $8. The museum is located on the North Embarcadero, at 1492 N. Harbor Drive.
