C lang, clang! Clack! T wack! We are in a small town in Hungary. T e
streets are very noisy. It’s February. T e attack of the busós has begun. T e busós look like wild, woolly
animals. T ey’re racing through the town. T ey shake cowbells. T ey hit the pavement with sticks. People watching squeal with delight. T e arrival of the busós is reason
to celebrate. It’s been that way for a long time. Two legends explain why. One is about when an army attacked this place a time long ago.
22 NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORER When the army came, the people
in town ran away. T ey hid in a forest. A figure came to the people. It told them to make weapons and masks. It told them to run through the town on a stormy night. T e villagers did that, and they
scared the army away. T ey saved the town. Now, the people act out this victory every year. In the second story, the enemy is
winter. Winter will not leave. T e busós come and chase winter away so spring will come.
