Facilities with impact Stuart Davies, Business Development Manager for higher education at Saville Audio Visual, says that such facilities can have a considerable impact on prospective learners and, crucially, their parents, who are often helping out with student fees. “If parents go into a university and see first rate technology and collaborative rooms, they’re going to say ‘this is the place for you’.” For example, Saville recently installed a state-of-the- art 3D cinema system into Coventry University, where a film festival recently welcomed internationally renowned directors and film stars. Impactful facilities are now becoming


ubiquitous across large firms – but universities can also play their part in bringing this technology to smaller enterprises. The University of Huddersfield and Kirklees council have deployed EU funds for a state-of-the-art innovation centre to support local business collaborations. Dr Michael Wilson, Technology Director at 3M BIC, said: “The


clarity and height of the screens in the telepresence system gives the impression of everyone being together in the same room. It also allows simultaneous directional speech, which normal videoconferencing usually can’t cope with.” But those positive impressions need not


be restricted to the physical kit. Like many education institutions around the world, the University of Oxford boasts a suite of open learning resources which it shares on iTunes. Not only are these expert lectures valuable as learning resources for external learners helping to dissolve the bricks and mortar walls of the university, but they also serve to give prospective students a taster of what the university offers. Digital downloadable resources are another channel for the institution to use to promote its activities.
