David Diamonon, a Texas native, drove the development of organized lacrosse in Russia upon moving there in 2007 for work and led a club team in Moscow until last year, when he moved to Ukraine for a promotion. Eugene Arkhipov, who was born in Moscow and played at RIT, took over the Rebels, a name which he immediately dropped. He’s on Russia’s 23-man roster, along with Diamonon and Nick and Will Koshansky of Notre Dame and Penn, respectively. Russia also has a stout coaching staff, including Cornell assistant Peter Milliman as head coach and Hall of Famer Joe Cuozzo as one of the assistants. … Wales’ first international game took place against Scotland in 1992. Wales has played in five world championships since. … Argentina is one of two teams from South America competing … New Zealand’s roster includes three native 19-year-olds, Jeremy Kincaid, Max van der Maas and John Clayton, and three Denver-native brothers, former Hampden-Sydney defenders Alex, Andrew and John Pritzlaff.

Colombia will have a team at the games for


the first time. Its roster is largely made up of players from the Bogota Legends and Pereira Wolves. … Leaders of Finland lacrosse hope to spread knowledge of the game as much as they can so the younger generation can get first-hand experience, not just rely on online videos to teach themselves the game. “Sisu” is also an important term, a word used to describe Finnish character. Finland midfielder Anssi Kaisalmi played stateside at Division I Mercer this spring … North American neighbors of lacrosse’s traditional powers, lacrosse in Mexico is getting off the ground. Jose Luis Espinosa, who played lacrosse at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, moved back to his native country and took the first step in developing the sport. Exhibition games in the summer of 2009 kicked things into high gear, and the sport now is established at seven colleges throughout Mexico City. Players must leave for practice or games early, or risk being a victim of traffic in and around the city. … Spain, which held a seven-day tryout, makes its third appearance.

Costa Rica is one of two first-timers in the Grey Division… Czech Republic will play in its fifth championship … The Polish Lacrosse League has fielded teams since 2010, and there are two divisions. The club team, Kosynierzy Wroclaw, is strong, having representatives on teams that played Israel and Latvia in December. … Pat Dougherty lives in Istanbul with his Turkish wife and has pushed the growth of the sport starting four years ago. It’s the country’s first world championship. The Turkey Lacrosse Association has hosted the Turkey Lacrosse Open the last two years, which has featured 11 teams of both male and female players. A former Providence defenseman, Bertan Unal, is on the roster.
