Shack Stanwick, who’s just as good as his surname suggests, has unfinished business at Boys’ Latin By Matt Ward

oys’ Latin (Md.) senior Shack Stanwick has been a top national prospect since his freshman year of high school. Even then, his pedigree preceded him — his three older brothers and four older sisters all played (or are still playing) NCAA Division I lacrosse. Steele Stanwick was the 2011 Tewaaraton Award winner at Virginia. CBS College Sports analyst Sheehan Stanwick Burch, Wick Stanwick and Coco Stanwick were All-Americans at Georgetown. Wells Stanwick and Covie Stanwick are returning All- Americans for Johns Hopkins and Boston College, respectively. Tad Stanwick played at Rutgers. So Shack Stanwick, who will join his brother Wells at Johns Hopkins next year, has been in the spotlight from the start. “There’s been a lot of pressure on Shack,” Boys’ Latin coach Bob Shriver said. “Every time he steps on the field, he’s a marked guy.” Stanwick, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound attackman (all of the Stanwicks play attack) has lived up to the hype. In 2013, he had 31 goals and 56 assists as the Lakers went 19-0 in the regular season and spent most of it ranked No. 1 nationally. He has the Stanwick family trademark: pinpoint stick skills woven in a traditional leather pocket.

Shack Stanwick will be the eighth Stanwick sibling to play Division I lacrosse when he joins his brother, Wells, at Johns Hopkins.

Shriver has coached three of the four Stanwick boys. With a Stanwick, he said, you know passes will be on the money and the stick work will be impeccable. In addition to playing catch with siblings, the Stanwicks grew up constantly playing wall ball in their Baltimore garage. Stanwick is used to questions about the famous family name — “There’s a little pressure that comes with it,” he said. “They’ve accomplished so much.” — but he would rather talk about Boys’ Latin’s

unfinished business. Despite the sparkling season, the Lakers lost 10-9 to Loyola Blakefield in the MIAA-A final after losing in the semifinals the two previous years. Stanwick spent the offseason getting faster and stronger, sharpening his split

dodge, shooting on the run, getting his hands free after a dodge and going directly to goal. He’ll have a hard time downplaying the family legacy next year when he and Wells join forces at Johns Hopkins. The brothers last played together at Boys’ Latin during Shack’s freshman year, when Wells was a senior. “He gave me a hard time anytime I messed up,” Shack Stanwick said. They will share that senior-freshman dynamic again in 2015. “I think he’ll always give me a hard time,” he said, “no matter how old I am.” LM
