News in brief Members’ Directory

The Members’ Directory is now available for you to connect with other SCI Members. We encourage you to update your profile to ensure other members are able to find you and involve you in relevant discussions. Please access the Members Directory and your profile at: www.soci.org/My-SCI. The ‘how to guide’ which is accessible via the left hand menu on each page within the Members’ Directory, provides you with details on how to make the most of the directory. Refurbishment

The refurbishment works have now started at SCI’s headquarters in Belgrave Square. We would like to remind you that regrettably, as a result of the refurbishment, the Business Centre will not be available for members to use until the end of July 2014. You can find full details on the refurbishment on the SCI website at: www.soci.org/My-SCI/ My-Membership.aspx. Digital access to C&I

There are now several ways for you to get digital access to Chemistry & Industry (C&I). All SCI members can get free access to C&I through their smart phones and tablet computers by downloading the C&I App. You can also now read C&I online using the new e-book feature. We’ll also be providing news updates from C&I to all members through a dedicated e-alert. To find out more about each of these, please visit: www.soci.org/news/publications/CnI.

SCI Strategic Plan 2014-16

Jack Melling Chair of the SCI Board of Trustees

At the Board’s annual planning day in September, the Board reviewed performance and discussed our rolling three year business plan. We reconfirmed SCI’s current Vision, Purpose and Strategic Objectives as outlined below. In addition to continued achievements in the

core areas of publishing, conferences, membership activities and awards, SCI has made solid progress against our plan during 2012-13 with the launch of a number of new projects, for example, the Members’ Directory, e-membership, expanded early career programmes and commencement of the refurbishment of Belgrave Square. Other projects are due to be completed by end of this year, eg the SCI e-brochure and Group Handbook update. The 2014-16 business plan and budget will be finalised at the 27 November BoT meeting and I will update you in the January 2014 issue of C&I. At this stage, I am confident that the Board will invest in initiatives to help us to better understand the needs of our current and prospective members so that we

Our Vision is for SCI to be recognised by key influencers in industry, academia and government as a valuable source of multi-disciplinary knowledge and networking, encouraging innovation based on chemistry and related sciences for the benefit of society

Our Purpose is for SCI to be an open, multi-disciplinary forum connecting scientists and business people in order to advance the application of chemistry and related sciences for the benefit of society

can ensure that our services are relevant and inspire active engagement from members and partners to deliver our charitable purpose. At the September Board Meeting, we welcomed newly elected Trustees, Inna Baigozina-Goreli, Mike Bushell, Geoffrey Fowler, Mark Harrison and Harry Swan. During this meeting, we agreed that the term for Standing Committee Co-options will be up to three years, non-renewable (as agreed for BoT Co-options at the last AGM). We discussed ideas to improve two-way communication between governance and groups including inviting Group Chairs to the Board Meeting on the AGM Day. We heard from the Revenue Generation Working Party which has proposed a range of options, eg sponsorship, advertising and fundraising from members, as well as some longer term initiatives which will need further investigation. I look forward to seeing as many members as possible at the Members’ Forum on 19 November so I can hear your views on how to make SCI a society that inspires your passion and commitment and one that will attract the next generation of members.
