Olivier Brandicourt has been appointed chairman of the board of Bayer HealthCare and member of the Bayer AG executive council.


Domainex, a drug discovery company, has announced the recipient of its first Discovery STAR Award: Vilmos Fulop at the University of Warwick, UK. The award will give Fulop access to Domainex’s drug discovery capabilities to support his research for a new treatment for Chagas disease.


At Syngenta, Patricia Malarkey has been appointed head of R&D from the start of 2014. She succeeds Robert Berendes, head of business development.


The board of Eli Lilly has elected Marschall Runge as a new member. He will serve on the company’s science and technology committee and the public policy and compliance committee.


Amakem, a Dutch clinical stage ophthalmology company, has named Jean Marie Stassen as vice president, R&D.


Lin Römer has been appointed as additional managing director of AMSilk. He will continue to head the scientific and technical development of AMSilk’s technology, and, together with Axel Leimer, will direct company business.


Biocartis, a molecular diagnostics company, has announced that Ulrik Cordes has joined the company as chief commercial officer.

German cell-therapy company apceth has expanded its senior management team with the appointment of Stefanos Theoharis as chief business officer. Theoharis will lead apceth’s business development and business operations, as well as promoting the continued expansion of apceth’s GMP manufacturing business.


The names of the multidisciplinary 2013 Balzan prizewinners have been revealed and include Pascale Cossart from the Institut Pasteur in Paris, France, for his work on infectious diseases.


Cambridge Major Laboratories has appointed Mark Sawicki as its new chief business officer.


TranScrip Partners, based in Reading, UK, which supports biopharmaceutical product development and life-cycle management, has appointed pharmaceutical physician Glen Pater as a new senior partner in Australia. In addition to Pater, TranScrip has also welcomed Tim Joslin as a UK senior partner.


The VIVUS board of directors has appointed Seth Fischer, a former senior executive at Johnson & Johnson, to serve as its ceo. Fischer will also join the VIVUS board of directors and succeeds Anthony Zook.


James Allan, a member of the National Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, has been awarded the 2013 Smoluchowski Prize by the German Aerosol Society at the European Aerosol Conference in Prague. The award recognises Allan’s significant research contribution to aerosol science. It is awarded annually to a researcher under 40 years of age who has made the greatest impact on their chosen research field.


SuppreMol, a privately held German biopharmaceutical company developing autoimmune diseases therapies, has named Michael Tansey as chief development officer.


Forest Laboratories has appointed Brenton Saunders, former ceo of Bausch + Lomb, as ceo and president. He succeeds Howard Solomon.


Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory has appointed Teri Willey as vice president, business development and technology transfer. Willey will direct the laboratory’s commercialisation and technology transfer activities.


Merck has announced multiple management and organisational changes in its pharmaceutical


businesses. Belén Garijo, currently coo at Merck Serono, the biopharmaceutical division of Merck, has been appointed president and ceo of Merck Serono. She succeeds Stefan Oschmann, who, as a member of the executive board and head of pharmaceuticals at Merck, will focus on further developing the Merck Serono and consumer health divisions, as well as the allergopharma and biosimilars units.


Global safety company, Draeger Safety UK has appointed Kevin Barton as its new regional account manager for the south, covering the chemical and petrochemical sectors.


The board of directors of Bioaster, a technology research institute focused on infectious diseases and microbiology, has appointed Tom Shepherd as ceo. He succeeds Jacques Berger.


Midatech, which designs, synthesises and manufactures nanomedicines based on its gold-nanoparticle drug delivery technology, has appointed Jim Philips as ceo.


James Dawson & Son, producer of silicone and organic rubber products, has appointed Paul Edwards as its new managing director.


‘In recognition of his outstanding creativity, innovation and productivity in fluorine chemistry research’, Sebastian Riedl of the Berlin Institute for Chemistry and Biochemistry has received the very first International Young Talent Award in Fluorine Chemistry from DuPont Chemicals & Fluoroproducts (DC&F). The award was presented at the 17th European Symposium on Fluorine Chemistry in Paris.
