Drevs shows off dramatic weight loss Kathy Drevs, an employee of U.S. Figure Skating’s Headquarters

for 23 years, has looked a little diff erent around the offi ce lately. “I feel like I’ve fi nally found the me that was inside,” Drevs said.

“I hike, love yoga and feel like a slug if I don’t do some type of exer- cise every day. I never thought those words would come out of my mouth!” Drevs, U.S. Figure Skating’s director of member services, began

going to Metabolic Research Center on July 2, 2012, and has already lost 155 pounds and 165 inches, 26 of which came off within her fi rst month on the program. “I fi nally had to take charge of my situation and did so without

anyone’s knowledge, meaning my doctor didn’t tell me I had to do it or my husband wasn’t pushing me, etc. It was just time. I feel better than I have in 20 years and I encourage everyone who thinks they can’t do it to try. Metabolic sends out weekly affi rmations and my favorite hangs on my offi ce door: ‘I am strong. I can do this. I believe in myself. I AM doing this!’” Another source of motivation? Her family, both biological and

otherwise. “I’m so lucky to have an incredible support system,” Drevs

said. “My family is enjoying every pound of my success right along with me, and the support I receive from the staff at Metabolic is un- matched when it comes to weight loss programs, and believe me, I’ve tried them all. And my fi gure skating family, well, what can I say? They’ve been amazing. For my birthday, instead of taking me out to lunch, Susi (Wehrli-McLaughlin) asked for my recipe book so every- one could make a dish that was on my program. And they like to tell me when even my new clothes are getting too big.”

Adrian College has added intercollegiate team fi gure skating to its varsity lineup. Adrian off ers a unique opportunity for skaters to participate in both fi gure skating and synchronized skating at the varsity lev- el. The teams are fully funded by the college and fi eld skaters at all levels and disciplines. “I am honored to be a member of the varsity fi gure skating team,” sopho- more co-captain Tricia DeFelice said. “I love being able to compete in freestyle, solo dance and synchronized skating as a varsity student-athlete.” Adrian College is set to host the 2014 U.S. Intercollegiate Team Skating Championships at its campus rink, Arrington Ice Arena, April 11–13, 2014.

Ice Theatre of New York premieres new Villella piece Ice Theatre of

New York reached out to one of the greats of the ballet world, Edward Villel- la, for a new piece, titled “Reveries.” The work previewed Oct. 19 at The Skating Club of Boston. Skat- ing to Tchaikovsky, ensemble members Brent Bommentre and Kim Navarro portrayed an artist and his muse in a lyrical ballet featuring eight ensemble members including John Kerr, Eve Chalom and Joel Dear. The evening began with another premiere,

Edward Villella’s latest work, titled “Reveries,” debuted this fall in Boston.

“Roots,” choreographed by ITNY artistic director Douglas Webster. The skaters, in jeans and plaid shirts, performed a joyous number starring Ryan Bradley. “I wanted to do something that was youth-

ful and contemporary — something that was kind of an Appalachian spiritual, feeling the group coming together to celebrate life,” Web- ster said. “Ryan is Jesus and Carly [Donowick] is a Mary Magdalene fi gure. That’s how I saw them in my head, as a healer and someone needing to be healed. I was hoping people would feel com- munity, forgiveness and compassion.” The third premiere, “Doodlin’,” was choreo-

graphed by Chucky Klapow for Bradley, Jona- thon Hunt, Erin Reed and Natalia Zaitseva to the music of Dizzy Gillespie. The fun piece included a “fours” death spiral. The rest of the show, titled “Ice:Dance,” pre-

miered Oct. 24 in New York City and featured works by Webster, JoAnna Mendl Shaw and Al- berto Del Saz. The ensemble included skaters Elisa Angeli, Patrick Connelly, Tyrrell Gene and Jessica Huot. A gala on Oct. 25 honored Kurt Browning and his wife, ballet dancer Sonia Ro- driguez.
