CAREER DEVELOPMENT

Add a Euro designation to your MCIOB >

CIOB members can apply for European Building Expert (EurBE) designation, the

European accreditation scheme for construction and building professionals.

It is awarded to candidates who meet experience and competence criteria set by the Association of Building Surveyors and Construction Experts (AEEBC). Applicants are assessed first by an AEEBC National Monitoring Committee in the country they operate in, then by an AEEBC European Monitoring Committee. Saleem Akram, a director at the CIOB, said: “The CIOB

has worked hard to get greater transparency in how the recognition of professional qualifications is implemented, particularly in relation to the professions provided for under the EU Professional Qualifications Directive. These EurBE Professional Cards give construction professionals greater recognition across Europe leading to a fair and transparent mobility system.”

TEAM COLLABORATION HOW TO MAKE IT WORK

WEST MIDLANDS EVENT EXPLORES WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE GREAT TEAMWORK

Georgios Kapogianni, associate lecturer at Coventry

University’s Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Building, and chairman of the CIOB Coventry & Warwickshire Centre, recently gave a talk on team collaboration.

Highlights of the session included: > The Eye of Competence — published by the International Project Management

Association — describes how an individual can make a good project manager by going through behavioural, technical and contextual competencies.

> Achieving the goals set out in the government report Construction 2025 (lowering costs by 33%, increasing delivery by 50%, reducing emissions by 50% and an improvement in exports by 50%) will require the industry to reinvigorate its image and increase the capability in the workforce, as well as investing in smart construction and digital design, BIM and bringing more research and innovation to bear.

> People working on projects do not sufficiently understand

each other’s tasks and responsibilities. Senior staff and project staff need to be more integrated.

> On the method of research and innovation, conducting this in the universities alone without the engagement of the industries would fail to identify key problems in the industry.

> Proactive behavior is vital to the success of a project. A person with a highly proactive behaviour had the highest chances of anticipating more accurately to outturn costs and time for the project. Proactive behaviour, together with technology such as BIM, results in greater collaboration between co-workers.

Recognition of MCIOB means you can apply for designation recognised in Europe

“Construction has a major role to play in leading this country out of recession and Talk Construction can play a role on shaping government policy for the industry. We need an event which properly reflects the increasing importance of construction managers in the design and specification process”

Chris Blythe

Talk Construction takes places on 25 & 26 November, Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, Westminster
