FEATURE PRODUCTION

WHAT KIND OF CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED – FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF LOCATION AND TECHNICAL ISSUES? There are always going to be issues to resolve. They range from environmental, including what the weather has to throw at us, to geographical where locations can have hostile RF conditions. Then there are some tricky costumes to deal with. It’s just part of the job. This trip to Iceland has

thrown a few our way. Some locations have been difficult to access – steep hills, with not much flat or even terrain to use the sound cart. The only way to work on most occasions is out of a bag. The portable rig was expanded to include the 744T as backup and a sound devices MixPre for the booms. I am using the limiters on the MixPre to

take the heat out of any peaks, so swords clashing retain a more natural sound.

YOU’RE CLEARLY A FAN OF SOUND DEVICES KIT AND THAT’S HARDLY SURPRISING GIVEN THEIR QUALITY. HAVE YOU FOUND ANY ISSUES WITH THEM? I love the 788T. I find it user friendly and reliable. The support from Sound Devices is also very good. Any issues are dealt with quickly as they are normally still at work when I get home. My main issue with the 788T is that it only has eight inputs, which can easily be used up on a job like this. I would like 16 inputs and 20 tracks which should cover most eventualities. I would also like analogue limiters on the inputs as I sometimes find the current limiters a little

harsh when handling peaks. I have been hoping for a new release from Sound Devices for a while, I still live in hope. Sound Devices does keep updating firmware and has gone some way with version 3.0 allowing two 788Ts to connect together and share metadata.

WAS THERE ANYTHING SPECIFIC THAT GOT THROWN AT YOU THAT WAS A REAL CHALLENGE? With Game of Thrones you don’t expect an easy day at work, even when it reads as a two hander. Dragon unit is a good crew. All the different departments work hard to reduce their negative impact

..and a Cooper 208D mixer

on production sound. For example, Costume and Hair departments help with the many tricky costumes. We’ve come a long way on this job and it takes the help and co-operation of every department to achieve the desired results. I am very fortunate to have

a great sound crew, with boom operator Simon Kerr who has also worked on all four seasons of GOT and is very experienced. Jonny Waite, Sound Assistant, primarily fits the radio mics and Daniel McCabe is Sound Trainee. www.sounddevices.com
