Ahead of the times: IBC 2013

With not long to go until the Amsterdam exhibition, we focus on some of the product introductions to come.

IBC2013 will see a number of new educational programmes including sessions entitled IBC Workflow Connexions, IBC Workflow Solutions, and Future Zone, as well as keynote speakers from Channel 4 and Twitter. IBC’s new Workflow Connexions club brings together professionals from the workflow community, both online and onsite, and allows the 1,000+ members to use NFC technology called ‘Touch & Connect’ to exchange and collect data in the IBC Workflow Solutions area and on stands around IBC. IBC Workflow Solutions, meanwhile, is a presentation theatre housing case studies covering file-based technologies, while Future Zone will provide a glimpse into broadcast R&D labs and academic papers.

IN CONTROL Glensound is using IBC2013 to launch its GS-GC5/USB commentary mixer, which provides interfacing facilities for two commentators plus a spare (guest). There are three mic/phantom/line switchable inputs on XLR, with broadcast-quality mic amps and Glensound’s ‘Referee’ compressor/ limiter system. Each commentator has his or her own on/off and level control. There are two headphone outputs for each commentator, one on a 6.35mm jack socket, and one on a 3.5mm jack socket. Each headphone amp has an additional output for the guest position. The headphone mixer has two inputs: one is the mix of the incoming audio (commentators), and the other is the audio return from the

USB interface. Power is via an external plug top power supply, or batteries. Taking centre stage on the Yamaha stand will be the Nuage audio post- production solution, which combines Yamaha control and interface hardware with Steinberg’s Nuendo 6 DAW software (see review in Audio Media June 2013). Nuage unites production processes that require a multitude of devices, connections, and interfaces in traditional systems. Also on show will be the CL series mixing consoles; R-series I/O units and CL Editor software; DUGAN-MY16 auto mic mixing card; HS series studio monitors; StageMix Version 4 iPad app; and Steinberg’s Nuendo Live multitrack recording software. New from AEQ is Capitol – a

digital audio console that now benefits from the addition of audio- over-IP. The eight-fader control surface comes with an associated audio engine. Capitol is said to incorporate all of the features necessary at the majority of stations, including automatic monitor speaker cut-off, cough muting, fader-start, control signalling, interface signalling for automation of external equipment, external communications management, and intercom. Lawo is highlighting the mc²56

console, which is available in five different frame sizes (from 16- to 80- faders). The hub of the operation is a touchscreen in the central GUI and some of the console’s highlights include permanent metering of the 16 central faders, more directly
