Lighting the


LED lighting and presence detectors from Tamlite have lowered energy burden at Aston University.


Aston University recently took full advantage of the government backed financing to make energy saving improvements across their campus. Three IT suites underwent refurbishment and Andrew Bryers (Aston’s Energy Manager) saw this as an opportunity to put in place the very latest lighting technology. “There’s no doubt that LED is a technology with huge benefits, in terms of saving energy, cutting carbon and reducing maintenance,” comments Andrew Bryers. “However, installing LED lighting in the IT labs wasn’t quite a straightforward decision. For one thing, there’s a huge amount of choice available, making it hard to select the best supplier for LED. It’s also still an expensive technology, and the Salix fund has strict criteria about achieving payback quickly.” According to Tamlite, lighting energy consumption has been reduced by 88 per cent and made a saving of £2,200 a year on the electricity bills.


Mr Bryers went on to explain “I visited several LED suppliers and came to the conclusion that Tamlite offered the best

value and product combined,” adding “Using a combination of LED and presence detection technology, Tamlite were able to create for Aston University a lighting scheme that delivered payback in just four and a half years – well within the criteria for Salix funding.”


In its IT labs, Aston installed 60 of


Tamlite’s Infinity TM LED panels, controlled by 8 Vision 103 passive infra-red sensors. The 600x600mm LED panels give out bright, cool-white light with a total circuit load of 50W and a lifespan of 50,000 hours.


The Infinity TM LED panels’ glare control means that there is no problem with light bouncing off computer screens. This helps to ensure students have a comfortable working environment. The ceiling-mounted Vision 103 sensors have a 6m diameter detection area, which means that the lights switch on instantly when someone enters the IT labs. Also, when a room is empty, the lights automatically switch off again.


“The IT labs are not in constant use,” comments Aston University’s Andrew


Bryers. “However, with students coming and going at all times of the day and night, the lights tended to be left on permanently. In the past, this was a source of energy waste that we just had to deal with. But the Vision 103 presence detectors have changed all that. Now the lights are only on when they’re actually needed.” “We’ve been very impressed with the


Tamlite lighting scheme,” says Bryers. “The carbon savings have been fantastic, and the project is on track for very quick payback, allowing us to meet the Salix funding criteria. Our maintenance team is happy, too. The long-lasting LED panels mean that there’s no need to constantly replace fluorescent lamps. We’re able to redirect our maintenance resources elsewhere. All in all, it’s been a very successful project.”
