The SATRA Everest Assault Boot


This year, the 60th anniversary of the first successful ascent of Mount


Everest, SATRA remembers its involvement in British mountaineering's greatest achievement.


In 1952, SATRA received a request from the British Expedition to design,


build and test a high altitude boot for its planned assault of Mount Everest the following year.


SATRA provided four prototype pairs, which were tested in the French


Alps. Weighing just 1.9 kilograms, they were far lighter than rival designs. Thirty-five pairs of the chosen boot were put into production and 33


taken on the expedition. Each was handmade to suit individual members of the team, both Europeans and Sherpas.


After the successful ascent by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay on


29th May, expedition leader John Hunt wrote to SATRA's director of research, Harry Bradley, saying that the boots were a great success and were worn by all members of the party above an altitude of 6,100 metres. Unlike any previous Everest expedition, not one of the British team had suffered from frostbite in their feet.


SATRA continues to research and help develop footwear products for use in a wide variety of applications throughout the world.

Skechers turns around in the quarter


In the first quarter, Skechers booked a 28.6% increase in overall ground


sales of $451.6 million, with double digit growth for all the sales channels, but its second-quarter results are likely to be affected by the early Easter holiday, which fell in the first quarter, and back-to-school deliveries shifting into the third quarter. For these reasons the company expects sales growth to be significantly stronger in the third quarter compared with the second one. In a conference call, the company’s chief operating officer and chief


financial officer, David Weinberg, said that third-quarter sales could exceed $500 million and that they should be up for the full year. Financial analysts forecast full-year sales of around $1.84 billion from 1.56


billion a year earlier and a surge in net profits to about $50.0 million from last year’s level of $9.5 million. Sales outside the US increased by 20.7% in the first quarter, with these


generated by the group’s subsidiaries and joint ventures around the world growing by 18.1% and sales to distributors up by 29.9%.
