FROM THE EDITOR I

Spring/Summer 2014 Shoe Shows get under way

’m just back from a very exciting show – the 80th edition of Expo Riva Schuh at Riva Del Garda, Italy.

spend time at the show talking to manufacturers, importers,

wholesalers and retailers from all over the world. As it is the first event of the Spring/Summer 2014 season, 7-8 weeks before Moda, it allows those who are sourcing footwear sufficient time to make a sample collection to sell on to their customers at the major European shoe events. It also provides an opportunity to get together with old friends and new from the footwear trade in a beautiful location, and gain information about which styles are selling well in other countries. My full review will follow in the August edition. In this edition we offer a preview of Pure London which will once

again play host to the UK’s largest collection of fashion footwear and accessories. The show takes place at London’s Olympia exhibition centre from 4-6 August. I’ll be attending the event, as usual and will look forward to meeting up with many of our readers at the show. We also report back in this issue on the success of Northampton

University footwear students at Graduate Fashion Week held from 2-5 June at London’s Earls Court. The students who have been working all year to complete

collections underlined the importance the rich history of Northampton’s leather industry has played in the minds of many of their new concepts in shoe design and leather designs. Graduates from the University of Northampton have routinely been recruited by the largest brands in the shoe industry with alumni working for brand names like Church’s, Jimmy Choo, Prada and Clarks. View some of the student’s amazing designs on Page 6 of this issue. Don’t miss Misfit on Page 18. In this month’s edition our mystery

retailer asks Mary Portas not only to help struggling shoe retailers, but also to come out onto the High Street and see some of the fantastic independent shoe retailers that are working hard to survive in this extremely difficult times. While, in Money Shop on Page 14, financial plumber, David

Gummers of F. Dickinson Footwear, based at Ulverston in Cumbria, offers retailers some useful advice on negotiation and how to deal with customer complaints. Finally, in this edition we are featuring Lisa Preston of ShoeMed,

Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. We will feature you and your shop in Retailer of the Month, in return for your help with our Best Sellers section (see Pages 28-29). We need to know your five bestselling brands overall, for Men, Women and Children. Also, for Men's Comfort/Casuals, Men's Formal, Ladies Comfort/Casuals, Ladies: Fashion/Contemporary Shoes, Ladies Formal. For Children, it’s Pre-Walkers, Walkers and School Shoes. I look forward to welcoming you to the Footwear Today Best

Sellers Panel! Just drop me a line or give me a call and I’ll tell you all about it. Roll on the summer show shows!

Best wishes, Cheryl
