and into the Light the Darkness Out of

Emergency lighting is needed in every office, school, theatre, events centre... Basically every building in the UK that the general public use needs emergency lighting. Because of this it is a huge market, perhaps not the most glamorous of the lighting industry, but definitely one of the most vital. We delve in to the world of emergency lighting and look at the diverse range of products available.

Emergency lighting is there to guide us out of a building in the event of an emergency. Every public building in the UK has emergency lighting but until it is needed, most of us don’t always notice it is there. The systems used within the products are often well thought out, intricate and designed specifically to help us in an emergency. With features such as low maintenance, adjustable brightness functionality, LED light source monitoring and software to monitor each system remotely the manufacturers really have to put these lights through vigorous tests and unique scenarios to ensure that, in the event of an emergency, these products will stand up to the job. New products are appearing on the market frequently with different USP’s to suit every functionality. Cooper Lighting and Safety have recently launched a new range of emergency exit signs with some great features. The range, called Velos, is both energy efficient and long life offering the consumer a low maintenance product that reduces the impact on the environment. “The introduction of our new line of Velos

emergency exit signs provides our end users with an energy efficient solution to emergency exit signage,” said James

Beresford, Product Marketing Manager for Emergency Lighting, at Cooper Lighting and Safety. “Beyond just savings, these products also allow for a reduction in maintenance and are compliant to the latest standards.”

The new range uses LEDs with a lifetime of up to 60,000 hours which offers the consumer a reduced cost of ownership. In addition to this, the whole Velos product range meet European Standard (EN) 1838, which mean they provide superior luminance across the legend for improved visibility in low light situations. The range has an additional function, for use within cinemas and theatres meaning the brightness can be reduced by up to 50 percent. The simple modular design allows a variety of mounting options without compromising functionality, making it easy to install with no need for specialist tools. Featuring environmentally friendly nickel- metal hydride (NiMH) batteries, Velos is available in self-contained, 230 volt (V) slave and Easicheck 2 variants. Additional options include, ISO7010 or

European-format pictograms, and 30 or 40 metre viewing distance options to suit project requirements. Harvard Engineering believe that LED’s are the perfect solution for emergency
