guests: “We couldn’t have expected that people would have so much fun getting soaked even on cloudy days!” he adds.

Extended Season

Established as a waterpark in 2001, Etnaland sits in beautiful surroundings about a half an hour from the tallest, most active and potentially most explosive volcano in Europe. It has since developed to include a zoo and dinosaur park and entertains around 300,000 guests during July and August. With the addition of the theme park, the plan is to sustain 150,000 visitors a month over a longer operating period – mid-April until late October/early November (the waterpark will remain as a summer attraction). A total of €50 million has been spent on the ‘dry’ expansion, introducing as many as 26 new rides and attractions. As well the contributions from Mack, there is also a mine train style coaster called Eldorado, the Hip Hop family coaster, a Disk ‘O’, S&S tower ride and a dark ride based around a haunted school. “We needed high capacity rides in the park,” explains Russello, “much more than any fibreglass slide could have provided, and we also wanted to provide a new element of fun in the waterpark, which is why we added a rafting river, flume ride and spillwater. As you know, theme parks are always thinking to the future, so I can say that our park is complete …for the moment.”

sand-blasted rollercoaster track, together with a large material storage area and administration rooms.

“Short ways and fast set-up times enable us to be competitive within the market,” notes von Elverfeldt. “For the last 230 years, the Mack company has reinvented itself again and again. It’s this spirit that has contributed to our success as one of the leading manufacturers of attractions worldwide, with the quality seal of ‘Made in Germany’.” With over 10 rollercoasters set for delivery by Mack Rides in 2013 – including The Storm at Etnaland – the new production facilities will certainly come in handy.
