What makes DALI such a good fit with LED, and how does this compare to analogue systems? PR: DALI has a range of features that compare favourably with traditional analogue systems. Devices on DALI networks have their own unique address and therefore it is possible to communicate with each fitting directly. This simplifies communication, but also provides programming flexibility and adaptability over the life of an installation, as the lighting designer is not tied to a system configuration dictated by the cabling infrastructure. The information flow is also bi- directional, with the DALI system opening up greater feedback from the luminaire. This can include lamp failure alerts, light levels, or load current being drawn. When you begin to make these savings it makes sense to build on them with the inclusion of LED.

You mention ease of installation as a plus point, could you please elaborate? PR: The DALI system wiring is straightforward, and can be carried out with a standard 2-core mains cable using non-polarity and free wiring topology. There is no need to physically wire luminaires in groups, as this is simply programmed software. This ensures complete flexibility throughout the life of the system as there is no costly rewiring required if there is a change in room use, just simple reprogramming. In addition to the wiring simplicity and interoperability, other benefits include two-way communication allowing for feedback from the control devices. The latter is particularly useful for (preventative) maintenance and even system integration purposes. The DALI benefits enable building owners to reduce the cost of ownership in their lighting installations.

How will the Helvar product range adapt to your predicted uptake of DALI? PvdK: Our R&D teams have been working on a new range DALI compatible LED drivers and lighting control solutions, and you can expect to see even more of these product solutions being launched throughout 2013. The interoperability of DALI and Helvar’s strive for open systems fully supports Helvar’s strategic promise “Freedom in Lighting”.
