• A MESSAGE FROM YOUR GENERAL MANAGER KEC Takes on Many Challenges

Late Winter Storm Rocky, oil and gas sector set unprecedented growth

Joe Harris

This year’s General Manager Report is being written on the heels of the blizzard and storm of February 25. I am very proud of the response of all of KEC’s employees during this event. It was all hands on deck and they all were present and engaged. We can look back to the ice storm of January 31, 2002 for many lessons learned on what to do and how to respond to the various problems faced during the storm. Having learned those lessons, we applied many of the remedies and solutions that came from it.

It is important to recognize that it’s not just the outside linemen that get your service back on, but a real team effort on the part of all employees.

It takes the office staff manning the phones, bringing in ma-

terials, arranging lodging, making sack lunches, feeding hungry lineman and contractors, dispatching and directing the restoration efforts from our office, to successfully get the lines back up and members power back on. I am grateful for such a dedicated group of employees and hope you are also.

In reflecting upon this past year of operations, it is clear that things are going well financially, as evi- denced by the patronage capital checks mailed out this week. Operationally we are being challenged by the unprecedented growth in the oil and gas industry caused by the development and growth of the Mis- sissippi Lime formation. The kilowatt hour sales to this industry far exceed the sales to the residential farm and ranch accounts that make up our system. While this boom is ongoing and doesn’t appear to have a short life span, it is important for your cooperative to insure that they pay their own way concern- ing infrastructure investment. With direction and the concurrence of the KEC Board of Directors, we are doing just that.

The transmission and substation infrastructure that was built to serve northern Oklahoma, did not anticipate this explosion of demand for energy on its system.

It has

been necessary in conjunction with Western Farmers Electric Cooperative, OG&E, Oklahoma Corporation Commission, and the State of Oklahoma to plan, per- mit, and construct new facilities to handle the growth. This is a cumbersome and laborious process requir- ing multiple permits from regional, state, and national agencies.

to be addressed.

It is great to be a part of such a dynamic and respon- sive organization focused on doing its best for its members.

It will take several years for all of the needs
