“In some cases non-critical upgrades are being delayed or even abandoned”

TVBEurope 17 Forum Systems Integration

HD integration for Norway

By Melanie Dayasena-Lowe

Gabriel Dusil: “In the foreseeable future OTT and Broadcast will coexist, as shown in recent studies showing a steady subscriber use of linear TV”

Tim Felstead: “SIs are going to take on the skills of their IT industry equivalents and become a much greater blend of those two skill-sets”

Jon Flay: “There’s definitely more focus on cost and greater consideration of IT and integrated services”

Have there been any major changes in the way you have been asked to carry out your work in recent years?

Cleaver:We are now completing projects within a fraction of the time we used to allow. This is partly possible because advances in technology allow it, but also a major change in attitude of our customers. Cost and timescale have, without doubt, become the prominent factors in requirements, although the reduced levels of clients’ resources also mean that there is a bigger onus on us to self-certificate installations, rather than go through prolonged customer commissioning. Dusil: At Visual Unity the main push for video is in PaaS (Platform as a Service) and SaaS

(Software as a Service) offerings to fuel our growth in online services. Beyond posting videos on free service web portals, companies with existing libraries also want a platform that offers better control of subscribers, infrastructure, and content rights. As a result, Online Video Platforms (OVP) have been introduced to address this demand, and to service this growing market. We have developed a video solution that can be offered as both a platform, as well as a service offering. Felstead: The transition to file-based operation encouraged

greater dialogue with our clients’ operational staff than in the discrete-media days. The skillsets deployed by SIs have become much more IT and operationally- oriented. This was a positive and healthy move for everyone concerned. Another key change is that timescales have become much shorter than used to be the case. For this reason, world-class project management has become essential. Flay: There’s definitely more

focus on cost and greater consideration of IT and integrated services. Integration has improved significantly in the last couple of years with more

“Our business is on target at the moment,” says Greg Hoskin, general manager of systems integrator Megahertz Broadcast Systems. “Part of the reason is that we are adaptable so that one day we will be building a playout centre, the next we will be implementing a broadcast facility for an unrelated organisation or OB company.” An example of this is the

television installation in Stortinget, the Norwegian parliament in Oslo. Video 4 partnered with Megahertz to complete the second phase of an upgrade of its television facilities to allow it to cover all its committee rooms and the main debating chamber in HD. “The first phase of the project was delivered in 2010, and we are really proud that Stortinget returned to us to expand the facilities,” says Lars Petter Ommundsen, CEO of Video 4. The latest project involved

two additional challenges on top of the normal issues in

designing and implementing a broadcast infrastructure. First, the building itself is a historical monument, so the cameras (Sony on Shotoku robotic heads) and the cabling had to be installed without damaging the historic fabric of the building.

Second, the system has to be continuously in operation, recording every word of every debate. As well as imposing tough reliability requirements, it also means that the small technical staff in the parliamentary television service need a very simple and effective way of controlling all the workflows. For this reason, Megahertz specified the VSM control system from LSB, allowing all the hardware to be configured and operated from a single simple user interface. As well as adding the VSM, the most recent contract saw Megahertz and Video 4 install 10 new Sony cameras, a Snell Kahuna switcher, a Snell Sirius hybrid router, Bluebell optical multiplexers and a Riedel intercom network.
