Each spring and fall, the Physicians Benevolent Fund Committee reviews ap- plications for assistance; however, emer- gency cases are assessed as required. All applicants must complete a confidential questionnaire to be considered. Policies state that recipients cannot hold in liq- uid assets more than the amount estab- lished by the Health and Human Servic- es Poverty Guidelines for income for the current year. For example, a household of two cannot hold more than $15,130 in cash, stocks, and investments. (Ap- plicants’ homes and automobiles are not liquid assets according to PBF policies.) Gov. Rick Perry appointed Ray Callas, MD, to the Jefferson and Orange County Board of Pilot Commissioners. A Beaumont anesthesiologist, Dr. Callas is a member of the TMA Council on Legislation and the Texas Delegation to the AMA House of Delegates.
Austin family physician Philip Huang, MD, received the 2012 Public Health Award from the American Academy of Family Physicians for his extraordinary contributions to the health of the American public. He the medical director and health author- ity for the Austin/Travis County Health Department.
The TMA Board of Trustees reappointed Robert A. Light, MD, Houston, to serve a final three-year term and Roberto San Martin, MD, San Antonio, to serve a second three-year term on the Texas Medical Association Insurance Trust (TMAIT) Board of Trustees. At the Oct. 19 TMAIT meeting, Bernard M. Gerber, MD, Bellaire, was elected to a second three-year term and Jack L. Cortese, MD, Corpus Christi, was elected to a three-year term on the TMAIT board. Kevin P. Magee, MD, Dallas, was reelected chair, and Dr. Light was reelected secretary of the TMAIT board.
Alan Tyroch, MD, of El Paso, is among five people Gov. Rick Perry appointed to the Advisory Council on Emergency Medi- cal Services. Dr. Tyroch is chief of surgery and trauma medical director at the University Medical Center of El Paso and chair of surgery at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso.
Surendra K. Varma, MD, received the Doctor of Science Ho- noris Causa Award from his alma mater, King George Medical University in Lucknow, India, for his outstanding work as an academician, clinician, and teacher. Dr. Varma is the associate dean of graduate medical education and vice chair of pediatrics at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock. He also is a member of the Texas Medicine Editorial Board.
