UK AIRPLAY ANALYSIS  BY ALAN JONES

TOPPING THE RADIO AIRPLAY CHART for the fourth straight week, Maroon 5’s Payphone (feat. Wiz Khalifa) increases its already substantial lead over the chasing pack. Adding 163 plays and 4.63m listeners week-on-week, it was heard more than 84.93m times on stations on the Nielsen Music Control panel last week, giving it a lead of 20.18m (31.16%) over Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe, which remains its nearest challenger. This week also marks a full year on the chart for Maroon 5’s last hit,

the Christina Aguilera collaboration Moves Like Jagger, which was an even bigger airplay phenomenon last year, spending a total of 11 weeks at No.1, having debuted fairly conservatively at No.41 a year ago this week. It jumped to 30 the following week, and hasn’t been out of the Top 40 since. It dips 25- 27 this week but remains a potent force, with 1,445 plays on 148 stations last week earning it an audience of 26.65m. In a week of limited activity, the only new arrival into the Top 10 of

Chris Brown: he climbs five to No.10 with Don’t Wake Me Up

will.i.am the conqueror: His collaboration with Eva Simons is top on the TV airplay chart

TV airplay chart top 40 © Nielsen Music. Compiled from data gathered from last Sunday to Saturday. The TV airplay chart is currently based on plays on the following stations: 4Music, Bliss TV, Clubland TV, Channel AKA, Chart Show TV, DancenationTV, Flava, Kerrang! TV, Kiss TV, Lava TV, Magic TV, MTV Base, MTV Dance, MTV Hits, MTV1, MTV Rocks, NME TV, Q TV, Scuzz, Smash Hits TV, Starz, The Box, Vault, Viva, VH1

the radio airplay chart is Chris Brown’s Don’t Wake Me Up. Dashing 15-10, it logged 133 more plays and 6.02m more listeners than in the previous frame, and gives him consecutive Top 10 airplay hits for the first time since

his career went into freefall following his conviction in 2009. His last single, Turn Up The Music, struggled to start with but eventually won over programmers and peaked 12 weeks ago at seven. Don’t Wake Me Up’s current lofty status comes with little help from Radio 1, which generally supports him but played the track only six times last week. Don’t Wake Me Up’s biggest audience shares came from 564 plays on the nine stations in the Capital network each of which aired it between 61 and 64 times, and 202 plays on the Kiss Network, where two stations played it 67 times, the other 68.

Don’t Wake Me Up was No.1 on

the TV airplay chart last week but is convincingly toppled by This Is Love by will.i.am feat. Eva Simons. Turning a deficit of 66 plays into an advantage of 63, This Is Love’s video was aired 644 times by specialist music stations on the Nielsen Music Control TV panel last week, with top tallies of 83 plays on Chart Show TV, 80 on Flava and 67 on MTV Hits. The fastest growing hit on the list is I Can Only Imagine, the collaboration between David Guetta, Chris Brown and Lil Wayne. The track’s radio profile is inferior but growing fast: it moves 48-34 on the radio airplay chart this week.
