FEET FIRST Continued from Page 9

“Progressions made in the concepts of ankle replace- ments in the 1970s and ‘80s produced dismal results,” Ringus said. “The original surgeons looked back on why the replacements failed, and made improvements to design and materials.”

In the early 2000s, total ankle replacements were

back on the upswing. In September of last year, Krueger stepped up to bat to receive the new STAR Ankle. “Yes, this procedure is new, but when they fi rst start-

ed doing knee and hip replacements I’m sure there were skeptics out there,” Krueger said. “I really think that in the future it will be just as common as a knee or hip replacement.” According to Dr. Ringus, that future may not be too far away.

“If you look at the objective studies, the success rate for 10 years out is incredibly high at 85 to 90 percent, which is on par with the total knee replacement,” Ringus said.

The usual recovery time is about three months, in- cluding time wearing a cast and about six weeks to al- low the bone to grow into the prosthesis. From prepara-

tion to recovery, Krueger said his experience was very positive.

“I have zero pain compared to before,” Krueger said. “I walked with a limp. I tried not to, but I did. Now I’m back to my normal stride.

“I’m a total believer in the STAR replacement system because it was done so quickly, healed quickly, and hopefully will last for years and years to come,” Krueger said.

The American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society is in agreement. The organization recommends total ankle replacement surgery as a safe, effective treatment to improve mobility and quality of life. However, the so- ciety also suggests patients explore months of conserva- tive treatment before considering the surgical approach of total ankle replacement.

“It’s still a frontier in medicine; we’re still learning and improving,” Ringus said. “But everyone has two feet, and we’re on them all the time. Being able to make people better through this—it’s a rewarding experience.” If you want to put your foot down on ankle pain or learn more about total ankle replacement procedures, visit the Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine website at http://www.orthonorman.com/.
