Intelligence in the data centre – don’t get left behind

This column has already suggested that we’re moving into the era of the Intelligent Data Centre, and the announcement by Redwood that it is entering the European market is just one more confirmation of this development. Redwood claims that its building-performance lithing provides on average a 75 percent reduction in energy usage from lighting in data centres, and serves as a single system to monitor disruptions to uptime. Customers include Facebook, where Redwood has delivered a 38 percent increase in energy efficiency at 24 percent lower costs.

Readers can make up their own minds as to the benefits of the Redwood solution, however, it is to be hoped that this example of a new entrant to the data centre market serves to remind us all that the old order is changing rapidly, and that there’s a whole tranche of new companies focusing on the data centre space. As with any emerging, vibrant market, not everything on offer will be particularly useful or robust, but just because a company doesn’t have a 50 year track record in the data centre space, doesn’t mean that its technology and products must be held at arm’s length for the next 50 years.

Carry out due diligence, look at customer references, make sure that you’re not setting yourself up as the fall guy when the new solution does anything but what it says on the tin, but don’t keep new ideas at bay just because they are being sold to you by a new, and unfamiliar, name. Many, if not all, of today’s most dynamic businesses are precisely that because they’re open to new ideas. And remember, the best approach to take is the radical one. Server virtualization has great potential, but are you implementing it as part of an overall IT optimization strategy, or just as a means to disguise the fact that you’ve lost control of the company’s server estate?
