Chinaplas 2012 | show preview

Shanghai prepares for the biggest Chinaplas to date

Close to 95,000 visitors attended last year’s Chinaplas event in Guangzhou - 15% more than the 2010 show – making it one of the world’s biggest and fastest growing meeting points for plastics and rubber processors. This year it is Shanghai’s turn to host the event, which runs from 18-21 April 2012. With all 17 exhibition halls at the city’s new International Expo Centre in use to house more than 2,600 exhibitors, the show organisers are expecting to set yet another attendance record. While predominantly an event for the Chinese

plastics industry, Chinaplas also attracts a considerable number of overseas visitors. Last year, they made up slightly more than 20% of the total numbers. Almost 70% of these overseas visitors came from the Asian region, with Hong Kong, India, Korea, Taiwan and Japan showing the largest attendances. Looking further afield, around 11% of overseas attendees came from the Middle East, 9% from Europe, and 7% from America. Organiser Adsale expects a similarly strong interna-

tional attendance in Shanghai, saying it has already taken registrations from more than 120 different countries. Shanghai is certainly a good location for the event.

Chinese economic statistics show the East China region – which Shanghai is at the centre of - produced 24.7 million tonnes of finished plastics products in 2010, accounting for 42% of the country’s total domestic output.

exhibition in Shanghai in April, making it the largest plastics fair of 2012. We take a look at the show and some of the exhibits

operations. Official data shows the city’s production of plastics products alone totalled 2.0 million tonnes in 2010, while resin output amounted to 4.9 million tonnes. The 2,600 exhibitors at Chinaplas 2012 will include

most of the world’s major machinery makers, attracted to a market that imported around €2.1 billion worth of plastics and rubber machinery in 2010, according to estimates by the German machinery association VDMA. Its data shows Germany was the leading exporter of plastics and rubber machinery to China in 2010 with a share worth €587 million, just ahead of Japan’s €578 million. Taiwan holds the third biggest share of Chinese machinery imports at €248 million, says the association. While the Chinese economy was not impacted by the

global recession as badly as the developed economies of North America and Europe, it did see some slowing.
