call them. Start-up is slated for the end of this year. The company described the move as a “major

investment” in plastics additives and one of the largest since its acquisition of the former Ciba additives business in 2009. Together with its existing CSB manufacturing agreement with Astra Polymer in Saudi Arabia, the new plant will make BASF the largest CSB supplier in the Middle East region according to the company. Meanwhile, Adeka of Japan made a significant move

into the Middle East last year with the investment of some ¥350 million (€3 million) into Al Ghurair Additives, a subsidiary of Al Ghurair Petrochemicals, in order to establish a joint venture company – Adeka Al Ghurair Additives – in Dubai. Initial manufacturing is focused on OPS products. Chemtura is also active in the Middle East with its

company has transferred all its polymer stabilizer business and assets to the new entity. Last year, Songwon also announced the full

incorporation of its Songwon Baifu Chemical joint venture with Tangshan Baifu Chemical to manufacture and sell thioester antioxidants in China. It has a backwards-integrated capacity of 6,000 tonnes. At the end of 2011, Songwon announced that it had

acquired Additives Technology Greiz (ATG), one of Europe’s leading producers of one-pack system (OPS) products. The ATG plant is located in Greiz, Germany, and has been producing dust-free additive packages since 2006. According to Morath, the acquisition will increase Songwon’s capacity of OPS products from 7,500 to more than 15,000 tonnes/year by mid-2012. Most of this is aimed for the European and Middle East market. The day after announcing the ATG acquisition,

Songwon revealed that it is forming a joint venture with Pan Gulf Holdings of Saudi Arabia and Polysys Indus- tries of Abu Dhabi for the global production and sale of OPS products containing its antioxidants. The new venture will be called Songwon Additive Technologies and it will become the parent company for ATG as well as having a series of manufacturing and commercial joint ventures in the Middle East. The first manufactur- ing JV in Saudi Arabia is scheduled to be operational by the end of this year and the second one in Abu Dhabi should be up and running in early 2014. BASF, which includes the former Ciba antioxidants

business, also announced a large investment in the Middle East last year. It is building a 16,000 tonnes/year production facility in Bahrain to produce OPS products, or customer-specific antioxidant blends (CSBs) as it likes to

Gulf Stabilizer Industries (GSI) joint venture with Al- Zamil of Saudi Arabia. GSI operates a plant in Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia, and has been expanding production capacity for antioxidant and Anox NDB no-dust blends of stabilizers by 35%. It is also bringing Chemtura’s latest liquid Weston LPP antioxidant technology to the region. In addition, Chemtura has doubled alkylphenol

capacity at its Catenoy production facility in France to meet growing demand. Alkylated phenols are used as a feedstock for sterically hindered phenolic antioxidants.

Additive advances New product developments in antioxidants have largely focused on improvements to existing workhorse products. There is also much broader availability of such products due to the proliferation of new suppliers, particularly in Asia. As might be expected, other new developments are aimed at higher performance efficiencies and products with a focus on sustainability. Thomas Schmutz highlights a number of new

developments from Chemtura. For example, the company has expanded its line of Naugard thioester antioxidants by establishing a new supply partnership for Naugard DSTDP and DLTD, and by adding new Naugard DTDTDP. The latter’s special feature is that it is a liquid that is particularly well suited for use in PS, ABS and rubbers. These products complement the company workhorse offering, Naugard 412S, touted for its high molecular weight, low volatility and excellent compat- ibility with polyolefins and engineering thermoplastics. Lowlite UV B1260 is another relatively recent addition

to the Chemtura portfolio. It is a combination of thermal and UV stabilizers and has been shown to provide superior protection from heat and light degradation that can lead to discoloration in polyurethane and TPUs. A low-viscosity liquid blend, which makes it easy to pump, it is miscible in all common polyols.
