Wood-plastic composites | machinery feature PlasMec of Italy has developed a range of mixer

systems for the production of wood-plastic composites (WPCs). The company’s WPC Series machines can be configured for the production of PVC-based WPC dry- blends or polyolefin-based WPC agglomerates. They increase the bulk density of the compounds,

extract the moisture from the wood fibres and ensure good distribution of additives. The latter can include colour pigments, UV stabilisers, flame retardants and biocides. Moisture levels of up to 16% can be reduced to residual levels of less than 1%, according to the com- pany, and the final product is free-flowing and dust-free. The systems for compounding PVC-based products have a heating mixer, typically operating at 120-130o

C,

coupled with a cooling mixer with a double-jacketed vessel. Systems for producing WPCs based on PE or PP can be based on a heating mixer, operating at around 160- 170o

C, combined with an air cooling system. Combiwood systems for both PVC and PE/PP are all

built around PlasMec’s TRM/FV heating mixers which are offered with total capacities of 100 to 2,000 litres (useful capacities are around 85% of these values). The maximum batch size in the largest mixer is around 520 kg for a 50:50 wood/PP formulation.
