£30 MILLION ANNOUNCED FOR COMMUNITY GREEN SCHEMES AND PUBLIC SECTOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Energy Secretary Chris Huhne has announced funding of £10 million for local community energy projects, and a £20 million boost to the existing public sector energy efficiency loan scheme. Chris Huhne said: “This is great news for the public

sector. Not only do we need to encourage energy efficiency in our schools, hospitals and universities, we also need to get green energy generation and energy efficiency into our communities. That’s why we are also making £10 million available for communities to help spur an energy revolution at a local level.” The new £10 million Local Energy Assessment Fund, managed by a number of community networks and administered by the Energy Saving Trust, will be run as a competition, with the chance for around 200 community organisations to get to grips with energy efficiency and renewable energy generation. Organisations including parish councils, voluntary associations, development trusts and faith groups are all eligible to apply. There is around £50,000 available for each successful community to be used to help assess the potential for energy efficiency and local renewable energy generation and get things started in local communities. This is a short term scheme where work will need to be completed by end of March 2012.

Interested communities can apply via the Energy Saving

Trust and money will be allocated in two rounds. The second round will close to applications at noon on 20 January 2012 with successful communities notified at the end of January.

The Government has also set up a Community Energy Group to look at how local energy opportunities can be further explored in communities.

In addition a further £20 million in Salix loans has been made available for public sector energy efficiency projects in England before the end of March 2012, saving organisations money on energy bills and reducing carbon emissions. Salix loans are provided for energy efficiency projects that pay for themselves within five years through lower energy bills.

Repayments are made from the money saved on bills, and once the loan has been repaid the organisation will continue to benefit from the low carbon equipment and the savings it delivers. To date, the scheme has funded over 7000 projects across Great Britain. Interested public sector organisations need to apply to Salix Finance Ltd and have their loan agreed by the end of March 2012. Details of how to apply are available at: http://www.greencommunitiescc.org.uk

ELECTRIC DREAMS COME TRUE AT COUNCIL CAR PARK Lincoln has taken another step towards reducing its carbon footprint, with Lucy Tower Car Park becoming the county’s first car park to have an electric car charging point. The £5,000 duel charging point, which is part of the City of Lincoln Council’s ‘Lincoln Green’ campaign and has been funded by DEFRA and Cenex, will allow electric car owners to charge their vehicles for free when using the council-owned car park, with two cars able to charge at a time.

City Council staff will be able to try out the charging point over the next few weeks, with the loan of an EV Smart Car from Cenex to use as a pool car.

Councillor Fay Smith, Portfolio Holder for

10

Environmental Services and Public Protection at the City of Lincoln Council, said: “We’ve been working for some months now to install an electric car charging point in Lucy Tower Car Park, and we’re very pleased to be able to open it to the public. This is one of a number of Lincoln Green schemes we have ongoing to help reduce the city’s carbon footprint, such as installing solar panels on some of our properties and organising Lincoln’s first climate change conference. I think Lincoln, with its relatively small boundary, is the perfect place to own an electric car, so I hope it will be well used.” To use the charging points, which are located on the top floor of Lucy Tower Car Park, electric vehicle owners will need to use their charging card. www.lincoln.gov.uk

QINETIQ LAUNCH NEXT GENERATION ENERGY FROM WASTE PLANT

QinetiQ has launched its revolutionary Energy from Waste solution. This scalable, next generation technology is designed to consume waste and process it to produce a clean, renewable source of energy.

Energy from Waste (EfW) is a flexible enterprise-wide solution that will enable customers to recover value from their waste through the generation of heat and power. QinetiQ’s decentralised approach will reduce landfill transportation costs, produce energy close to the source of the waste and offers customers complete ownership of their waste management process. The installation will increase operational efficiency through

the removal of disposal contracts and land taxes and exceed corporate

responsibility through the removal of waste transportation to central disposal sites. These financial and environmental benefits can be measured through QinetiQ’s Enterprise Waste Management software that provides organisations with a clear view of actual savings in both costs and carbon. Healthcare, retail and specialist facilities

management services are all striving to identify a de-centralised Energy-from- Waste solution that has the ability to meet its Waste Management and Energy Recovery Requirements. QinetiQ’s small-scale next generation Energy-from-Waste solution will be able to meet either or both. www.qinetiq.com
