SEEKING APPLICANTS for MOAA’s Board of Directors


Applications sought for board of directors This year, as required by MOAA’s bylaws, eligible MOAA members will elect 12 new directors to take office Oct. 31 to replace those who will complete their six-year terms. The association needs highly qualified officers with proven track records in the grades of W-1 through O-10 to serve on the board. The bylaws prescribe the appor- tionment of board seats by service. For this year’s election, nine of the 12 vacancies are service-specific: one Army, five Navy, two Air Force, and one National Oceanic and At- mospheric Administration. The Ma- rine Corps, Coast Guard, and Public Health Service have no specific vacancies this year, but officers from those services may apply for the three open at-large seats. A special nominating commit- tee will select for each upcoming vacancy the nominee who, in its judgment, will best serve the inter- ests of MOAA and its members. The committee’s slate of nominees will be presented directly to the voting membership by mail for election. Printed ballots will be furnished with the August 2012 issue of Mili- tary Officer, and Internet voting again will be offered. Newly elected directors will be installed after the annual meeting in the Washington, D.C., area Oct. 31.


Submitting an application An officer wishing to apply should download the application form from MOAA’s Web Base (www.moaa.org/ boardapplication). The form will ask for: • a résumé of your military service; • an account of your present involve- ment in business, local civic and

political affairs, and service to the military community; • your reasons for wishing to join the board and the skills you would bring to the business management and other affairs of the association; • a recent head-and-shoulders pho- tograph in civilian clothes that is suitable for publication; • your consent for a credit check, if nominated (The consent form is included with the application form online.); • a list of commercial and nonprofit boards on which you currently serve; • a copy of a recent Leave and Earn- ings statement for active duty and active-status officers; a copy of your Report of Separation from the Armed Forces (DD Form 214) for retirees and former officers; a copy of your retired pay order or letter of transfer to retired reserve status for Reserve and National Guard retirees; and • the names, addresses, and tele- phone numbers of three references whom you will ask to write to the committee on your behalf. Reference letters must not accompany an appli- cation but must be mailed separately to the address below. Reference let- ters must be in hard copy (no emails) and signed. No more than three let- ters will be considered. Your application package must be


in loose-leaf form. Please do not bind the application package together, and do not staple multipage documents (use only paper clips). Regional Vacancies To be sure the board reflects the geographic distribution of the voting membership, at least four directors must come from each of six regions, in which reside ap- proximately equal numbers of vot- ing MOAA members.

Special Committee on Nominations In early April, incumbent directors from each service will select primary and alternate representatives from their services for election to the nominating committee. Neither in- cumbent directors nor staff members may serve on the committee.


Bylaw requirements There are 36 directors of the associa- tion: eight Army, eight Navy, eight Air Force, three Marine Corps, two Coast Guard, one Public Health Service, one National Oce-
