TECHNEWS IN ASSOCIATION WITH POINT BLANK’S PRODUCTION TIP OF THE WEEK HOW TO CREATE A DUB SIREN

JONNY MILLER summons the power of dub with Ableton Live’s Analogue Synth

POINT BLANK ONLINE SCHOOL brings you weekly fresh nuggets of music production advice courtesy of our team of pro producer course developers and tutors…

This week Jonny Miller re-creates a classic dub siren sound using Ableton’s Analog synth. For many years, mainly thanks to dub reggae, a portable siren box (pictured below) has always been a sought after piece of kit for DJs and producers, usually made with cheap component parts, a soldering iron, a tin box and a steady hand. The art of making these small DIY synth devices has become known as circuit bending.

Jonny’s virtual siren is perfect for adding rising and falling tension to your sets, or some proper sound system fl avour to your productions!

You’ll hear the infl uence of the dub siren and sound system culture in all forms of electronic music these days, most recently in the tough ghetto house sounds of Zed Bias,

the crunk fl avours of Redlight and Major Lazer and of course, within dancehall and dubstep.

Once you’ve fashioned the siren’s main

controls with the Analog synth (or

any synth you may have, just follow the steps shown), you can add a whole host of different effects to treat the siren’s output sound. Try adding a Phaser or Flanger for an extra sense of space or, add a panning effects device to move the signal from left to right as it speeds up and slows down.
