deliveries and he said it is simply a wonderful feeling and an emotional experience. “I don’t know how to put words to it,” Tignor, who has been with NFEC for more than 30 years, said.
Tignor said it is the effort of so many peo- ple working together that makes the event what it is—something that has grown from helping just a few families to usually more than 25.
Copeland credited Tignor with getting many of the vendors on board to donate when they began the annual event, but Tignor said it was not diffi cult to get them to contribute. “Vendors call ahead of time now asking if it’s time to donate,” Tignor said.

Along with the vendors, business owners, employees and co-op members donate, with contributions from $25 to several thousand dollars. Tignor said he has former employ- ees who have moved on to new jobs in other
states who still make con- tributions. Brown men- tioned an individual who was a recipient of the Fam- ily Christmas generosity one year due to health is- sues, but was able to donate money to the cause the next year.
Each year around Dec. 21, after the donations are collected, the families selected, the groceries or- dered and put in boxes (assembly-line style with a lot of team work), NFEC employees team up and ring doorbells. And instead of asking those who answer the door to pay a bill, they hand them food for the table, an account balance wiped clean, and a letter explaining the Northfork Co-op Family Christmas tradition.
Part of the letter reads, “Our hope is that this to- ken of friendship will be ac- cepted with the spirit that it was intended. It is our way of encouraging you that there is hope of better to- morrows for you and your family.”
After the deliveries, the employees gather for a small party. They eat and talk about holiday plans, and it’s also a time for those who made the deliveries to share their stories.
“It puts everybody into the right frame of mind,” Copeland said, “feeds the Christmas spirit.” OL
