F
or All the S
aints... William L. Niemann
Growing up during the Great Depression, Bill became one of those small-town kids whose lives were transformed by their local church college. After graduating from Carthage, he saw combat action in the Second World War, and then finished law school at Northwestern. He eventually rose to become Vice President, Secretary, and General Counsel at Brunswick Corporation.
Bill’s mind sparked curiosity in manifold directions. His lawyer’s disposition loved a debate. He climbed mountains, ran distance races, and practiced until he became an accomplished pianist. A patron of both the Chicago Symphony and the Lyric Opera, his handle on e-mail was “Niepiano.”
Doris and Bill raised two sons and basked in the lives of their grandchildren. Loyal Lutherans, they supported their church and Lutheran Social Services of Illinois. At Carthage, they helped build a new library, create a distinguished professorship of Lutheran Studies, and establish the Niemann Scholarship Endowment. Recently, Bill provided a lead gift for the new Carthage performing arts center, still a few years away. Even in his last days, he looked to the future.
Planned and estate gifts to Carthage, such as will inclusions, charitable gift annuities and trusts, and life insurance, provide ideal opportunities to benefit you and the College. Call Dr. Jim Unglaube at 1-262-945-3024; send e-mail to
