Restrictions grow

According to a Pew Forum on Reli- gion & Public Life report, restric- tions on religion have substantially increased for 2.2 billion people (one- third of the world’s population). Gov- ernments greatly increased restric- tions on religious practice in Egypt, France, Algeria, Uganda and Malay- sia. About 70 percent of the world’s people live under significant religious repression. Muslims and Christians were the most sizable groups to suf- fer harassment, but Jews (less than 1 percent of the world) were persecuted in 75 countries.

Post 9/11 spirituality New York-area residents are more spiritually active since 9/11, a survey shows, but it may be a coincidence rather than a response to the terrorist attacks. The Barna Group found that 46 percent of people living in or near New York City reported attending worship services in the previous week in 2010, up from 31 percent in 2000. “The research suggests that faith and religion took on new urgency for many New Yorkers after 9/11, but the impact was neither immediate nor long-lived,” said David Kinnaman, Barna president. “While ... religion’s importance did grow in the years after 9/11, church attendance and active faith measures did not really start increasing until after 2004.”

Captain America vs. Corinthians Who said: “We often suffer, but we are never crushed. Even when we don’t know what to do, we never give up”? In a recent poll more Ameri- cans attributed the passage to comic book hero Captain America, Martin Luther King Jr. and former President George W. Bush than to its actual source: 2 Corinthians. The American Bible Society found that 12 percent of Americans correctly attributed the quote, while 56 did not. At 27 percent, King received the most misplaced credit.
