INDUSTRYGLOBAL

mission was born. Getting young professionals to actively participate in an industry network is for exactly that purpose was a novel new approach to traditionally expensive and exclusionary events. Party to this is a concept of knowledge transfer from industry executives to these young professionals. The cleantech industry requires lateral and dynamic thinking and GLD uses this mantra to stimulate engaging conversations around current industry-specific dialogue.

What does GLD believe in? “It’s pretty simple, we want 100% renewable energy and we don’t want to drink toxic water or breathe disgusting air” (Chris Williams). GLD knows that it is part of the solution by creating the answers themselves, but it also recognise that they can’t do it alone. We, as a global community, must collaborate both to increase our influence and power but to sustain our passion and energy. The Green Light Distrikt provides a place, both online and offline where young, world changers can unite to learn from each other, and form the long term friendships that will be needed to accelerate cleantech adoption. Even with high expectations, GLD knows to start small and focus.

Simple but powerful

Having started in Boston doing three seemingly small, but when paired together, powerful elements; these remain a core function of the organisation along with a further new development .

 Industry Insiders. Each city (or cluster) has its own group of young cleantech professionals that write on issues specific to their area. Using the global platform (the Web), Insider articles are shared around the world instantly.

 Cleantech Kingpins. The real value lies in creating an offline network. The speaker series called Cleantech Kingpins is where GLD poses a question and invites local entrepreneurs and experts to answer it. This provides a place for young professionals in each cluster to establish friendships but also to learn from older experts.

 GLD Pow Wow! The ‘pow wow’ started as a regular event for all the industry insiders to meet each other and now has turned into a small monthly event in Boston. Each city will eventually hold these monthly, more informal, events alongside Cleantech Kingpin speaker series.

 In the near future, GLD Research is looking to work with SMEs that have transferrable products and are looking to expand, but are unsure of exactly how to approach a new market. Using GLD’s international network of clusters and locally embedded Industry Insiders, whom performmany different but complementary roles, GLD will work on a consulting basis to help develop a truly global cleantech market.

Friendly interaction

GLD values are clear – “we make friends, we don’t network. Networking focuses on the utilitarian benefit of a human relationship. We believe every relationship is valuable in and of itself” (Chris Williams). A key part of this is creating online AND offline interaction. On-line contact is important but nothing replaces real life, face to face interactions.

There are a lot of good blogs, and a lot of good events, but none that do them well together. GLD believes in uniting the young community that will be crucial in developing a sustainable transition to a low carbon economy. It is also vital to learn from experts. Being young certainly has its benefits but older mentors are invaluable. The final piece of the GLD puzzle comes in connecting cleantech hubs around the world. GLD exists in multiple cities, so that information can be shared between these cities. In many cases, each city or region has its own specialty that is useful in creating a greener, cleaner world. However the need to communicate and collaborate with thought leaders, young and old, in other cities is essential.

If young professionals can establish solid relationships now, as the first generation that has the ability to enter the cleantech industry from the beginning of their career, it will place the industry at a huge advantage in the future. Ultimately GLD is here to provide young cleantech professionals the community, resources, and information they need to develop their careers.
