MISSION HILLS' PLANS FOR 2011
The Mission Hills Town Council’s (MHTC) first town hall meeting of 2011 covered topics ranging from the new Vons construction to updates on food drives, parks and even cell phone reception improvement plans. Along with other Mission Hills organizations, last year the MHTC was instrumental in the plans for a new Vons supermarket, Mission Nights, a farmer’s market and the 4th of July celebration. While focus- ing on park expansions, the concerts in the park and increasing membership, for 2011 MHTC plans on organizing a tree-planting day, additional public art projects and upgrades to Pioneer Park, located at 1521 Washington Place, where University Avenue and Washington Street split. Pioneer Park has $30,000 remaining from past fund- raising initiatives and ideas are currently brewing on how to best spend it. An improvement plan for the park began two years ago and has been broken up into two phases. The new tot lot playground is already completed, and with pending city approval, it is hoped that by the end of March two new tables can be added to the park's picnic area as well as have its sidewalk re-graded and new landscaping.

homes to give them a real experi- ence of American life and to give the host families memories they will never forget,” Terry Williams, president of the SDDC board of di- rectors and a home host, said. “Per- sonally, it helped me put a face on the conflict in Iraq, and to develop a deep compassion for these young people who have had a first-hand experience of the horrors of war.” Enrique Meza, director of pro-
grams, Cath DeStefano, executive director, and Kristina Leano, pro- gram coordinator, are currently or- ganizing the arrival of delegations from Haiti and Syria. The delegation of women from Haiti will be studying solutions for gender-based violence. After a recent three-week visit
by a delegation from Azerbaijan, neighbors in North Park’s Switzer Highland neighborhood established a neighborhood-to-neighborhood relationship with a neighborhood in Baku, the capital of Azerbai- jan. The San Diego delegation, in- cluding Martin Kruming and his daughter, Meghann, has since vis- ited their friends in Baku as guests of the Azerbaijan government. SDDC supporters can accompany visitors to their meetings, introduce visitors to tourist spots, and open their homes for meals or overnight stays. Membership for the SDDC is open to anyone interested in sup- porting national understanding and cooperation, constructive economic connections and peaceful interaction. Paul Schulman, a MHTC member, is forming a com- mittee to help choose the specifications for historic lights to be installed in the District 2 Block 2E near Hickory Street after the undergrounding work that is taking place is completed. The project should be completed within 12 to 18 months and suggestions on the lighting will be submitted to the city by summer. Those interested in participating in the project should contact Schulman at
imradman@cox.net. The demolition of Vons should begin in March and the final plans for the remodel are in the begin- ning approval stages. The project, it was announced, should realistically take a year to complete, although final details concerning public art on the walls are still uncertain.
As well as an update on the Mission Hills contribu- tions to the San Diego Food Bank’s pre-holiday food drive, a map of poor cell phone reception zones in the area was presented as well for review by MHTC. Drew Potoki, a city arborist, and Lara Gates, vice
president of the board of trustees, presented the im- portance of lowering the cost of street tree trimming. Finally, work on the West Lewis Pocket Park on the
corner of Falcon and West Lewis is finally underway and expected to be finished come summer. The new park will include seating areas, interpretive bird signs and public art. Gates is also working to restore the Goldfinch side of the park by adding public art, putting in a platform and bench overlooking the canyon, restoring the existing art posts, cleaning up overgrowth and erasing graffiti.u
