COMCAST OUTDOOR FILM FESTIVAL Friday-Aug. 20 FREE Adjust your GPS units accordingly. The Comcast Outdoor Film Festival, held for years at Strathmore in North Bethesda, is moving to a new location this year: the Universities at Shady Grove. You’ll still be able to watch movies under the stars for eight nights, beginning Friday with “The Blind Side” and concluding Aug. 20 with “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.” The Universities at Shady Grove, 9630 Gudelsky Dr., Rockville. 301-816-6958. Visit www.filmfestnih.org for a complete schedule.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY AGRICULTURAL FAIR Friday-Aug. 21 One of the area’s largest agricultural fairs, the Montgomery County Fair, is upon us, beginning at 3 p.m. Friday. The main attraction is the sprawling midway of rides and carnival games both fearsome and tame, but if you wander toward the grandstand, you’ll find what county fairs are all about: crazy amounts of fried food and a demolition derby. This fair caters to families and night owls alike. Beginning Saturday, it’s open from 10 a.m. to midnight through Aug. 21. Montgomery County Fairgrounds, 16 Chestnut St., Gaithersburg. 301-963-3247. www.mcagfair.com. $10 admission; free for age 11 and younger.

ALEXANDRIA IRISH FESTIVAL Saturday FREE If your “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” T-shirt comes out only on St. Patrick’s Day, then you obviously have never been to the Alexandria Irish Festival. Pat Troy’s Ireland’s Own restaurant caters the event, serving such typical Irish fare as corned beef and cabbage and Irish stew. Pipe bands, bagpipers, singers and Irish dance troupes perform from noon to 7 p.m., and it wouldn’t be an Irish festival without Guinness and Smithwick’s on tap. So throw on a piece of green clothing and celebrate the Emerald Isle on the banks of the Potomac. Waterfront Park, 1A Prince St., Alexandria. www. ballyshaners.org/festival/ festival_front_2.htm.

PATTON OSWALT Saturday With multiple Comedy Central and HBO comedy specials, major-label comedy albums, steady voice work in numerous animated films and a starring role in the surprising 2009 indie drama “Big Fan,” Patton Oswalt has done pretty well for a comic often pigeonholed into the “alt-comedy” sub-genre. While his subject matter can be esoteric (the menu at Kentucky Fried Chicken, for instance), the laughs are consistently big-time; see for yourself when Oswalt performs at 8 p.m. Warner Theatre, 13th and E streets NW (Metro: Metro Center). 202-783-4000. www.warnertheatre. com. $27-$34.50.

D.C. RESTAURANT WEEK Monday-Aug. 22 You know the D.C. Restaurant Week drill by now: From Monday through Aug. 22, everyone in Washington can be a foodie with more than 200 restaurants offering three-course fixed-price lunch menus for $20.10 and dinner menus for $35.10, excluding beverages, tip and tax. Where should you go? That depends on what kind of food you like — or where you can get a reservation. Though many prime seatings have been snapped up, the playing field expands dramatically if you’re willing to eat on the early or late side; check www.opentable.com/ washington-dc-restaurants for participating restaurants and availability.

PM @ THE TM Wednesday The Textile Museum’s after-hours soiree returns with “Mod Madness,” a “Mad Men”-themed party where attendees will vie for the title of Best Mid-Century Dressed as they sip cocktails in the museum’s garden, listen to live jazz and DJ sets, and silk-screen their own T-shirts or bags. We aren’t sure how the Madison Avenue types would feel about silk-screened shirts, but try it for yourself from 6 to 9 p.m. Textile Museum, 2320 S St. NW (Metro: Dupont Circle). 202-667-0441. www. textilemuseum.org. $10, includes one drink ticket.

EARL LLOYD BOOK SIGNING Thursday FREE Sports trivia time: Who was the first African American to play in the National Basketball Association? If you answered Earl Lloyd, you would be correct; he suited up for the Washington Capitols in 1950, knocking down professional basketball’s color barrier in the process. Meet a living legend when the Alexandria native and member of the Basketball Hall of Fame signs copies of his autobiography, “Moonfixer,” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Alexandria Black History Museum, 902 Wythe St., Alexandria. 703-746-4356. www. alexblackhistory.org. — By Alex Baldinger

IT’S FREE!
