DIA DEL GALEON S

TARTING this 2010, the Philippines joins the rest of the world in commemorating Día del Galeón (Day of the Galleon) on October 8 of every year, following the Unesco Resolution passed last year in Paris, France, which honors the Galleon Trade between the Philippines and Spain via Mexico that took place for 250 years from 1565 to 1815.

On July 16, 2010, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), which is the lead agency for organizing the festival, held a press conference at Barbara’s Restaurant, Intramuros, to formally announce and launch Día del Galeón Festival 2010, which is anchored on the theme “Continental Connectivity, Precursor to Globalization.” The Galleon Trade is one of the most important trade routes in world history because it bridged Asia, starting from Manila across the Pacific Ocean, with Europe,

“Although the Galleon Trade occurred

centuries ago, its present-day impact and historical significance provides a wealth of areas for exploration, discussion, and study. The objectives of Día del Galeón are to assess the impact of the Galleon Trade as a vessel of cultural transmission across continents; trace its effects as a major influence in world political economy and its repercussions on present-day globaliza- tion; establish its role in the develop- ment of marine sciences and their related areas; affirm integrity and importance of indigenous peoples endangered by the Galleon Trade and Spanish colonization and establish the historic role of seafarers during centuries of Galleon Trade and their contemporary manifestation in the lives of modern marine workers in light of their

Galeón Festival will come from the Philippines and other countries linked with Hispanic heritage and impacted by the Galleon Trade experience, underscoring Unesco’s proclamation of 2010 as the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures. The declaration of the present year as such makes “rapprochement of cultures the hallmark of all policy- making at local, national, regional and international levels, involving the greatest number of relevant stakeholders.” The Baler 400 Steering Committee headed by Sen. Edgardo Angara and the NCCA have teamed up with national and international agencies in the careful
