Water Parks

Schlitterbahn opens

two in Texas

THE first phase of a US$360m Schlitterbahn water resort in Cedar Park, Texas, is expected to open for business in 2012 and will include a waterpark, river walk, hotel, convention centre and retail space that will eventually cover 96 acres. In other Schlitterbahn news, construction on Blu Bambu, a

new waterpark in Pflugerville, Texas, is also scheduled to begin by June of this year and is expected to be open by May 2011. It is thought there will be enough demand in the area to support both parks. Developer and co-owner of Blu Bambu Joe Brisco,

commented: “Austin is pretty much the only large city in Texas that doesn’t have multiple waterparks. The more facilities there are, the more attendees will attend each of the different parks.” The park is expected to attract more than 300,000 visitors annually from across central Texas.

FlowRider installed at

Salen

SALEN ski resort in Sweden has installed a FlowRider into its Experium indoor entertainment centre. Covering four floors, Experium has everything from bowling

to yoga to several restaurants, a 3D cinema and cafés. The main feature is the waterpark, with water slides and the FlowRider. Urban Jansson, managing director for Experium AB,

commented: “This is an immensely important venture for us and a major investment in tourism in Sweden. “Salen is already the single largest tourist destination in

Scandinavia and with Experium we will now be able to provide families with a complete portfolio in terms of experiences and holiday activities.”

First stage complete in

California

CALABASAS City Council, in California, US, has taken the first step in developing a waterpark at De Anza Park. However, it is reported that some council members have been disappointed with the initial design – saying it looks like a “Las Vegas resort.” The master plan, adopted by the city council, called for an

approximately US$8m waterpark and conceptual designs depict a park complete with waterslides, splash pool and a miniature river shaded by large palm trees. Also proposed are an eight- lane swimming pool, locker rooms, an office complex and concession stand. Updated plans were expected to be released as InterPark

went to press.

Beijing to open

waterpark

BEIJING government officials have announced they intend to transform the city’s famed Olympic Water Cube into a massive water park, featuring seven-story water slides and a wave machine. Operators of the stadium say the project will cost Y200m (US$29m). Yang Qiyong, deputy general manager of the Water Cube,

also known as the National Aquatics Centre, has said: “A Canadian company (Forrec) is designing and building these facilities to make the venue one of the biggest and most modern waterparks in the world.” However, the plans come as Beijing’s water crisis shows no signs of abating, with officials failing to provide a plan on where they are going to get the necessary water for the project from.
