Fair pay for female workers

More than 4,000 female public sector at Birmingham city council have won the right to be paid the same as their male counterparts, in a watershed for British equality law. An employment tribunal found in favour of female workers employed in 49 different types of job, including sanitation workers and cleaners, who complained that they were being excluded from the bonuses available to men.

During the hearing, the tribunal heard how a man doing the same pay-graded job as a woman could earn four times more than her. Under a bonus scheme, male refuse collection staff sometimes received up to 160% of their basic pay. In one example presented at the hearing, a refuse collector was paid more than

four times the salary of a female colleague on the same pay grade.

Paul Savage, the solicitor acting on behalf of the claimants, estimated the bill for the council, based on the 4,000 test cases was about £200m. However, he claimed that if a further 20,000 women from the 57,000-strong workforce also came forward to lodge claims; the figure could rise to up to £1bn.

Spring clean your home to boost your sex life?

Although housework might be seen as the death of romance for many relationships, a study has shown that for many couples, the more housework you do, the more active your sex life will be!

The study, which was published in the Journal of Family Issues by Dr Constance Gager questioned 6,877 married couples about three different hypotheses based on: “time availability, gender ideology, and a new multiple-spheres perspective using the National Survey of Families and Households.”

Dr. Gager - lead researcher and an assistant professor of family and child studies at Montclair State University in New Jersey – said that “rather than compromise their sex life” because of time demands at work or at

home, “this group of go-getters seems to make sex a priority.”

The study defined housework as a number of different chores including cleaning, washing dishes, washing and ironing clothes, as well as preparing meals, and shopping.

The Journal of Family Issues summarises the study as follows: “The results contradict the hypothesis that time spent on household labour reduces the opportunity for sex. The authors find support to suggest that both women and men who ‘work hard’ also ‘play hard.’ Results show that wives and husbands who spend more hours on housework report more frequent sex.”

So if you’re feeling lonesome tonight, better get the rubber gloves on and start scrubbing.
