Welcome to spring and this “worldly” issue of Wisconsin

School Musician,

where we embrace the editorial theme and also put our special global touch on it with the excit- ing introduction of

WSM on the World Wide Web!

In many ways, this issue symbolizes the importance of stretching our boundaries through multicultural, 21st

century educa-

tion, of which technology has a consider- able role. Incorporating technology into traditional mediums can help extend our reach with both teaching and learning.

The new WSM on the web is an example of breathing technology into a traditional medium. In the most recent readership survey, 70 percent of respondents told us they prefer to read a combination of ar- ticles in printed magazines and articles on web sites. By complementing the printed edition of WSM with a fully digitized version, we stretch boundaries, enabling readers to conveniently click on ordinarily static email and web site links and connect with worldwide sources. We offer another editorial dimension through interactive features like video and flash, where a photo in the print version can turn into a video online, bringing the reader into an

experience. See article on page 14 with video clips from international music expe-

riences. We also enable readers to custom- ize how they read and use the magazine from setting the way each page is viewed to creating bookmarks, highlights and personal notes within articles. Explore it yourself at www.WSMmagazine.org.

Regardless of the different ways we broaden our horizons, we are able to reach further than ever with music as our univer- sal language. Music is a bridge between cultures and in today’s global society there is both an opportunity and respon- sibility to teach students about the world through music. Whether it’s planning an international trip for your music group or exploring different cultures through the study of literature, this issue, in print and digital form, shares many ways that world music enhances education.
