YOUR UNION

NQTs win prizes!

Congratulations to the latest winners of the NUT’s prize draw for student members converting to full union membership:
Suzanne Burton of Thatcham, Berkshire, who wins a £500 Comet gift card
Andrew Palmer of London who wins a £250 Comet gift card, and
Katie Fox of High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, who wins a £100 Comet gift card.

Many thanks to Teachers Assurance for sponsoring the prizes, and Countdown for distributing them.

The NUT is still offering four terms’ full membership of the union for just £1 to all teachers who qualified in 2009, with a free copy of How to survive your first year in teaching by best-selling educational author Sue Cowley when you sign up to pay by Direct Debit.
Join online at www.teachers.org.uk or call 0845 300 2510 or 020 7380 6369.

Your union aims to get greener

As part of the NUT's commitment to sustainability and climate solidarity, we’ve signed up to the 10:10 campaign and pledged to cut our carbon emissions by 10 per cent by the end of 2010. We’re urging schools to do the same by joining at www.actionaid.org.uk/1010.

Thanks to Action Aid, the first 1,000 secondary schools to sign up will receive an education pack entitled Stupid or not: education for a smarter planet. This new multimedia resource is suitable for Year 3 upwards. It supports geography, science, citizenship and English and includes thought-provoking film clips and animations, story cards and lesson ideas.

The first 1,000 primary schools will receive a free copy of the award-winning toolkit PowerDown, with lesson ideas, images and videos to teach pupils about climate change.

The free packs are available before the Copenhagen summit on 7 December, when world leaders will decide how to tackle the effects of climate change. Find out more and get a free Countdown to Copenhagen pack at www.actionaid.org.uk/countdown.

Join The Wave, save the planet

The UK’s biggest ever demonstration in support of action on climate change is taking place in London on Saturday 5 December, ahead of the crucial UN climate talks in Copenhagen.

The Wave will call on world leaders to take urgent action to secure a fair international deal to stop global warming exceeding the danger threshold of 2C.
Organised by the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition, The Wave will show mass support for a better, low carbon future. NUT members are urged to show their support by donning blue clothes and assembling at 12 noon at the north west corner of Grosvenor Square (North Audley Street).

Find out more at www.stopclimate chaos.org/the-wave.

Secondary students: Speak up!

The NUT supports the English Secondary Students’ Association, and has invited an ESSA member to speak at annual conference fringe meetings and other events.

ESSA is run by students for students and aims to represent every 11 to 19 year old. ESSA’s goal is to make sure it’s not just the most articulate students who have a say in their education. It runs training programmes to teach the skills students need to speak up and make change happen. Whether you’re looking for communication training for your student council or campaigning for your student body, ESSA can tailor its training packages for your students’ needs.

ESSA’s Real Talk programme helps train those who risk exclusion, have been excluded or have special educational needs, in confidence, communication and campaigning. They may then become trainers themselves.
