On Mars

Astronauts on Mars would be in for a long stay. They would need to spend about 500 days on the planet. Then a window might open to return to Earth. The crew would need housing, vehicles, and suits. These basics would provide air and water. And places to live and grow food.

FIRST STEPS 1 SHORT-TERM SHELTER: NASA is testing a structure that recycles all water, air, and waste. Astronauts would live here while they assembled permanent shelters.

2 LONG-TERM SHELTER: NASA would ship resources to Mars to build permanent shelters. Another option would be to use Martian soil to create building materials.
