6 EARS Weightlessness may cause inner ear problems. An astronaut might experience motion sickness. Or, they might have balance problems.


7 HEART The heart doesn't have to work as hard in space. It doesn’t have to fi ght gravity.

8 MUSCLES Muscles need Earth's gravity to stay strong and toned. After many months in orbit, an astronaut can lose 40 percent of his or her muscle mass.

9 BONES Bones contain minerals like calcium. They can trickle out while an astronaut is in space. This makes bones brittle. Also, without gravity, bones don’t need to carry heavy loads. Astronauts can lose bone density each month. Exercise is one way to keep bones healthy.

An astronaut can grow up to 3 percent taller in zero gravity. Without the pull of gravity, the spine can expand and relax. The gain doesn’t last, though. An astronaut's height returns to normal after a few months back on Earth.
