THE POWER OF A HANDSHAKE


It is often said that the industry is built on relationships. I couldn’t agree more! As I traveled the country to participate in several of our Who’s Who Showcase events last spring, I witnessed this firsthand. I often found myself standing beside an exhibitor’s table watching the attending subcontractors and suppliers walk up and extend their hand to introduce themselves to the general contractor. This simple, yet powerful exchange marked the beginning of a new relationship. In every case, I came away with a feeling of great pride in how our Network helps build these relationships…one handshake at a time.


Imagine how difficult it is for a GC to be asked to build a hospital, school, dormitory, warehouse, firehouse, etc. in an unfamiliar location or state. At the same time, that GC knows they will rely on local trades and suppliers to ultimately weld the beams, pour the concrete or apply the finishes. Having never met any of these companies, remotely qualifying contractors via mounds of forms is necessary to avoid risk. But as we can see from these Showcases and sponsored pre-bid meetings for GCs and Owners, there is nothing like a good old-fashioned handshake. Speaking


directly to someone about their company’s capability is much more telling than the facts and figures placed on a form. I especially appreciate when a GC will ask about a challenging situation that a sub has worked through. The stories you hear are sometimes unbelievable and yet the building is standing tall!


Helping companies in this industry build lasting relationships is what I find most rewarding as President of The Blue Book Network. We are committed to continuously developing our information, tools and services to connect the industry more effectively. Right now, we are preparing to launch a valuable new tool that will allow our members to more easily extend their hand through a digital handshake and share their ProView to initiate the qualification process.
