Protection Agency’s asbestos ban. As a result, the compa- ny replaced the asbestos product they once installed with a non-asbestos product. They also took on abrasive blasting, also known as sandblasting, spray-on foam and spray-on acoustical plasters. At one point, they were working in 12 states performing asbestos removal and re-spray.
Learning from past experiences and passing on family values has also been vital to the health of the Nash companies. Ken notes one of the lessons learned was, “You’ve got to be on top of your money all the time or your business will not suc- ceed.” He further explains that his mother instilled in him and his siblings the importance of paying bills on time—even if they had to borrow the money because their company didn’t receive timely payment from customers.
“Integrity is one of the most important things here at Nash. We do what we say we’ll do. We own our mistakes. If it’s not our mistake we still try to help find a solution. When people say the name ‘W.W. Nash,’ they know that means quality, trustworthiness and honesty,” says Sean.
Originally painted by W.W. Nash & Sons in the 1960s, the Nash team returned in the 1980s to perform touch-ups to the Old City Hall, a designated national historic landmark that was once the city hall of Richmond, VA, but today houses office spaces. The massive project involved painting all of the arches, balustrades, quatrefoils, corbels and cast-iron columns.
What advice does the Nash family have for other family- operated businesses? “When working with relatives it’s im- portant to maintain trust, be effective communicators, leave work at work, and nurture family bonds,” explains Sean. Many years ago, Augusta started the family tradition of gathering together for Sunday dinner to keep the connections strong. “Also, treat others with respect and all employees like family,” Ken concludes. After all is said and done, the heart of the family is also the heart of the business.
