Inc., depended on NAP for two projects located along the waterfront of the Hudson River in New Jersey’s Weehawken Township. The sites are on the location of a former commuter parking lot for the New York Waterway Ferry Terminal where mixed-use buildings (apartments and retail) were slated for completion. Prior to construction it was necessary to clean out the existing storm sewers using jet vac equipment so that CCTV inspection teams could video the pipes. The video allowed the owners to identify the condition and location of the storm sewer pipes throughout the development areas.
“Due to the proximity of the sites to the Hudson River, the storm sewers were impacted by tidal fluctuations of the river throughout the day, which limited the available time to perform the work required,” says Sean A. Delany, PE, PP, CME, a Senior Project Manager with Bowman.
For the first project, jet vac services were used on approx- imately 1,650 linear feet of storm sewers, ranging in size from 10 to 42 inches in diameter. During the work, a second outfall to the Hudson River was discovered, which had not been identified on any plans. This resulted in a slight change to the scope of work in order to clean and locate this new outfall. The second project required jet vac services for about 536 linear feet of storm sewers, ranging in size from 15 to 24 inches in diameter.
“The staff at NAP was very professional and knowledge- able during the work performed. They were also flexible with the scheduling and timing due to the tidal constraints of the Hudson River, the condition of the pipes clogged with sediment and much debris, and changes to the project schedules due to unforeseen circumstances and discov- eries. The final report issued for each project was clear and easy to read and the video was of excellent quality,” says Delany.
HIGH-TECH DETECTIVES
Underground infrastructure system rehab may not intrigue those who don’t live the life; but for the NAP team, it can be very exciting. “There are a lot of unknowns when you’re dealing with trenchless rehab,” Mullen says. “Rehab isn’t cut and dried. You’re not hiring a firm to fix one thing. There are many facets to each project and we at NAP have no weak links from our managers to our employees who provide our clients with a seamless project experience,” he adds.
