Legacy 7 Construction, a construction management and general contracting firm, specializes in multiple markets, including solar, public storage, pharmaceutical, and higher education. This photo of the KDC Solar LLC – Silvi Gibraltar Rock Solar PV Project is one of many examples of the company’s work in the solar market.

Starting L7 was certainly not without its challenges. The team, led by Kessler, quickly learned that the connections and relationships they had built while at Torcon would not be easily leveraged in the new business.

“We had to start from scratch and rely on word-of-mouth marketing and strong networking to connect with the right clients and subcontractors,” says Kessler. “Looking back, we were a little naive to assume we could rely strictly on our old processes, procedures and contacts to essentially employ the same business model that we had always used and apply it to a tangential line of work.”

Ben III adds: “To be successful, we’ve had to become more flexible, to both assume and control risk. We learned to be more hands-on and vigilant in the field while maintaining high standards for jobsite safety, client focus, quality and professionalism, which we knew would set us apart from our competition. These are the cornerstones of our business, and they will never be compromised.”

Developing and implementing high standards for employee safety has also been a top priority for the company’s leadership.

“We knew we’d have to be diligent about making sure the guys worked safely in the field. We may not have realized, initially, what an undertaking that would be. But we did know we’d be unwavering about requiring everyone who enters a Legacy 7 Construction site to be properly trained and to work safely at all times,” states Joe Jr. Kessler adds, “We even worked with OSHA to create strict health and safety

standards and practices, which are taught to each member of our subcontracting workforce. The goal is to work smart and to work safely while still maximizing efficiency.”

Kessler continues: “Cutting corners and jeopardizing the safety of yourself or others on site is never acceptable. There is no place for that kind of behavior on any of our jobs.”

As with most family businesses, L7 is guided by a time- tested set of defining values passed down through generations: treat clients with respect, be honest no matter what the consequence, and conduct business with the utmost professional responsibility. These principles are what led the Torcivia family to ask Kessler—who cham- pions all of these values—to assume the role of President of the new business.

Also, leading by example, Torcivia Sr. showed his children and grandchildren that, to have a successful business, one must learn to anticipate, understand, and ultimately satisfy clients’ needs. Most important, however, he taught his descendants to understand that the men and women working with them are teammates and friends— not just employees.

“Without the men and women in the field producing quality work,” Joe Jr. says, “all of the risk management, financial strength, operational efficiency, and corporate strategy in the world are meaningless.” The L7 leadership recognizes that field personnel along with subcontractors are the key to managing a strong operation.
