place in a controlled environment, this manufacturing process occurs on a plot of land where there is no control over weather or other conditions, such as access for equip- ment, security,
road restrictions, etc. With so
many unknowns, selecting the right vendors is critical to the success of the process. And as always—once the stakeholders get to this part of the process—momentum is building and significant dollars are at risk if the “unit of one” does not get manufactured on time.
Many of the Invitation to Bid tools available to- day offer the ability to send thousands of emails and/or faxes to subcontractors and suppliers that the GC has worked with in the past. While that makes sense, it typically doesn’t fulfill the
requirements of the unique “project” that is being manufactured. In almost all situations, this process requires that the GC reach out to new vendors that specialize in providing a service or product that is specifically required for this project. In some cases, the “manufac- turing” site is in a location that is new to the GC.
